The Influence of Landscape Integration on Building Environmental Performance
Abstract
Landscape integration is an important component of sustainable building design because the relationship between vegetation, site surfaces, outdoor spaces, and building form can influence environmental conditions around and within buildings. Properly integrated landscape elements can provide shading, reduce surface temperatures, improve microclimatic conditions, manage stormwater, and contribute to improved occupant comfort. Conversely, poorly planned landscapes may provide limited environmental benefits or create additional maintenance and water requirements. Understanding the influence of landscape integration on building environmental performance is therefore important for developing climate-responsive and sustainable buildings. This study examines the influence of landscape integration on building environmental performance, focusing on how vegetation and other landscape features interact with building form and site conditions. The study considers trees, shrubs, ground cover, green spaces, landscaped courtyards, green roofs, vertical vegetation, and permeable outdoor surfaces in relation to building performance. Attention is given to the positioning, density, and type of landscape elements and their relationship with building openings, façades, entrances, and outdoor activity areas. The assessment seeks to identify landscape strategies that can enhance environmental performance. The study further considers the influence of landscape integration on solar exposure and microclimatic conditions. Strategically positioned vegetation can provide external shading to walls and windows, reduce direct solar heat gain, and moderate temperatures around buildings. The study also examines how vegetation can influence wind movement, humidity, and outdoor thermal conditions. Courtyards and landscaped open spaces are considered in relation to natural ventilation and the creation of more comfortable transitional environments between indoor and outdoor spaces. Water management and surface conditions are additional factors influencing environmental performance. Permeable landscape surfaces, planted areas, rain gardens, and other landscape-based strategies can support stormwater infiltration and reduce surface runoff. The study considers how these features can be integrated with building drainage systems and site planning. Landscape design is also examined in relation to dust reduction, outdoor air quality, biodiversity, and the overall environmental quality of building sites. Buildings may experience challenges when landscape elements are introduced without sufficient consideration of climate, building orientation, water availability, maintenance requirements, and existing site conditions. Inappropriate plant selection or poorly positioned vegetation may obstruct ventilation, increase maintenance demands, or interfere with building services and circulation. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated approach in which landscape and building design are considered together from the early stages of planning. Appropriate landscape strategies can provide environmental benefits while supporting functional and aesthetic requirements. The study aims to establish how landscape integration influences the environmental performance of buildings and identify architectural and landscape strategies that can improve site and building conditions. It is expected to identify relationships between vegetation, shading, microclimate, natural ventilation, stormwater management, outdoor thermal comfort, and building performance. The findings may provide useful guidance for architects, landscape designers, planners, developers, and facility managers involved in sustainable building projects. Effective landscape integration can contribute to reduced heat gain, improved environmental comfort, better water management, and more sustainable building-site relationships.
