The Influence of Glazing Type on Indoor Visual Comfort
Abstract
Glazing is a significant component of the building envelope because it influences the amount, quality, and distribution of natural light entering interior spaces. Different glazing types vary in their visible light transmission, solar control properties, reflectance, and optical characteristics, which can affect occupants' visual comfort. Inadequate glazing selection may result in glare, excessive brightness, uneven illumination, or insufficient daylight. Understanding the influence of glazing type on indoor visual comfort is therefore important for developing comfortable and visually effective interior environments. This study examines the influence of glazing type on indoor visual comfort, focusing on how different glass properties affect daylight availability and occupant visual experience. It considers clear, tinted, reflective, low-emissivity, solar-control, and other commonly applied glazing systems. The study evaluates how differences in visible light transmission and solar radiation control influence the quantity and quality of daylight reaching occupied spaces. Particular attention is given to glare and excessive luminance contrasts within interior environments. Glazing with high light transmission can provide substantial daylight but may increase the risk of direct and reflected glare when exposed to intense sunlight. Conversely, highly tinted or reflective glazing may reduce glare but can also limit useful daylight and create darker interiors. The study therefore considers the balance between daylight provision and glare control as an important component of glazing selection. The study also examines the interaction between glazing type, window orientation, room geometry, shading devices, and interior surface characteristics. The same glazing system may produce different visual conditions depending on façade orientation, surrounding buildings, solar exposure, and the reflectance of floors, walls, and ceilings. External and internal shading elements are also considered because they can modify the amount and direction of daylight entering through glazed openings. Occupant activities and spatial functions are further considered in assessing visual comfort. Offices, classrooms, residential spaces, healthcare environments, and public buildings may have different lighting requirements based on their visual tasks and duration of occupancy. Appropriate glazing can support adequate daylight for reading, working, circulation, and other activities while minimizing visual discomfort. The study therefore considers both objective lighting conditions and the perceived visual experience of building users. The study aims to establish the relationship between glazing type and indoor visual comfort and to identify glazing characteristics that can support effective daylighting while limiting glare and excessive brightness. Its findings are expected to assist architects, building designers, engineers, and developers in selecting glazing systems appropriate to different climatic and functional conditions. Effective glazing selection can contribute to improved visual comfort, reduced reliance on artificial lighting, and better overall environmental performance of buildings.
