The Influence of Corner Buildings on Urban Pedestrian Circulation
Abstract
Corner buildings occupy strategic positions within urban blocks and can significantly influence pedestrian circulation at street intersections. Their location at the convergence of two or more streets creates opportunities to organize movement, define public space, improve visibility, and establish important urban landmarks. However, poorly designed corner buildings may obstruct pedestrian routes, create congestion, reduce visibility, or generate conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles. This study examines the influence of corner buildings on urban pedestrian circulation, focusing on how their architectural form, entrances, setbacks, and relationship with surrounding streets affect pedestrian movement. The study focuses on the spatial characteristics of corner buildings and their relationship with adjacent sidewalks, intersections, crossings, and public spaces. Factors such as building footprint, setbacks, façade orientation, entrance placement, ground-floor uses, and corner treatment are assessed. The study examines whether the configuration of corner buildings supports direct and continuous pedestrian movement or creates physical and visual barriers. Particular attention is given to the treatment of building corners and how they influence the distribution of pedestrian flows between intersecting streets. The relationship between corner building design and pedestrian accessibility is further examined through the assessment of sidewalks, crossings, arcades, plazas, forecourts, and other transitional spaces. Recessed corners, chamfered building edges, covered walkways, and public seating areas may provide additional space for pedestrian movement and waiting. Conversely, projections, fences, steps, signage, and poorly positioned street furniture may reduce available pedestrian space. The study considers how these architectural elements affect movement efficiency, pedestrian orientation, and accessibility. Environmental conditions at urban corners are also considered because they can influence pedestrian comfort and the way people use intersection spaces. Factors such as shading, solar exposure, natural ventilation, rainfall protection, lighting, landscaping, and surface conditions are assessed. The study investigates how building height, orientation, façade configuration, and ground-floor treatment contribute to the microclimatic conditions experienced by pedestrians. These factors are considered alongside opportunities for pedestrians to pause, cross, wait, or interact at building corners. The study further identifies challenges associated with corner-building configurations, including inadequate sidewalk widths, poorly located entrances, obstructed sightlines, excessive setbacks, vehicle conflicts, inaccessible crossings, and insufficient space for pedestrian waiting. In areas with high pedestrian activity, these deficiencies can increase congestion and create safety concerns at intersections. The assessment therefore considers how architectural and urban-design interventions can improve pedestrian circulation while maintaining the functional and commercial requirements of corner buildings. The study concludes that corner buildings can play a significant role in shaping the continuity, safety, and quality of urban pedestrian networks. Appropriate corner articulation, accessible entrances, adequate setbacks, continuous sidewalks, clear crossings, active ground-floor uses, and environmental protection can strengthen pedestrian circulation around intersections. The findings are expected to contribute to architectural and urban-design strategies for integrating corner buildings with surrounding pedestrian infrastructure and creating more connected, legible, and pedestrian-responsive urban environments.
