The Influence of Building Material Selection on Architectural Performance

Abstract

Building material selection is a fundamental component of architectural design because materials influence the functional, environmental, aesthetic, economic, and technical performance of buildings. Decisions regarding materials affect how building elements respond to climatic conditions, structural demands, occupant use, and maintenance requirements throughout the building lifecycle. Inappropriate material selection can contribute to premature deterioration, poor thermal performance, excessive maintenance, and reduced user satisfaction. Understanding the relationship between material selection and architectural performance is therefore essential for achieving buildings that are durable, efficient, comfortable, and contextually appropriate. This study examines the influence of building material selection on architectural performance, focusing on the relationship between material properties and the overall performance of building spaces and components. The assessment considers materials used in walls, floors, roofs, ceilings, façades, windows, doors, finishes, and other architectural elements. Factors such as strength, durability, thermal properties, moisture resistance, acoustic performance, fire resistance, appearance, maintenance requirements, and compatibility with other building systems are examined. The study further investigates the influence of material selection on environmental performance and occupant comfort. Materials with appropriate thermal characteristics can contribute to improved indoor temperature regulation, while suitable façade and roof materials can reduce unwanted heat gain and protect interior spaces from external weather conditions. The study also considers daylight interaction, acoustic conditions, ventilation, moisture control, and indoor environmental quality as aspects that may be affected by material characteristics and their application within the building envelope. In addition, the assessment considers the aesthetic and functional dimensions of material selection. Colour, texture, pattern, surface finish, scale, and material expression can influence architectural identity, visual quality, spatial character, and user perception. The study examines how material combinations contribute to the relationship between interior and exterior spaces and how material choices can support the intended architectural language of contemporary buildings. Attention is also given to the ability of materials to accommodate changing functional requirements and maintenance interventions. Economic and sustainability considerations are further examined as important aspects of material selection. Initial material cost, availability, transportation requirements, installation processes, maintenance expenses, service life, recyclability, and embodied energy can influence the overall lifecycle performance of a building. Locally available and responsibly sourced materials may provide opportunities for reducing environmental impacts and supporting local construction economies, provided that their technical performance and durability are adequately addressed. The study aims to evaluate how building material selection influences architectural performance and to identify material-selection considerations that can support improved building outcomes. Its findings are expected to assist architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and building owners in making informed decisions that balance functional, environmental, aesthetic, economic, and maintenance requirements. The study ultimately contributes to the development of durable, comfortable, sustainable, and visually responsive buildings through more deliberate and performance-oriented material selection.
