The Effect of Site Planning on Building Environmental Performance

Abstract

Site planning is an important component of building design because the arrangement of buildings, landscape, circulation systems, vegetation, and open spaces can significantly influence environmental performance. Decisions made at the site level affect solar exposure, wind movement, shading, surface temperature, stormwater behaviour, and the relationship between buildings and their surrounding environment. Effective site planning can therefore reduce environmental stresses and improve the energy efficiency, comfort, and sustainability of buildings. This study examines the effect of site planning on building environmental performance, focusing on how site-level design decisions influence the environmental conditions experienced within and around buildings. Key factors considered include building orientation, spacing between buildings, site coverage, vegetation, landscaping, shading, ground surfaces, topography, and the arrangement of outdoor spaces. The study also considers how these factors interact with building form and envelope characteristics to influence overall environmental performance. The study further investigates the influence of site planning on solar radiation and thermal conditions. Appropriate building orientation and spacing can help control direct solar exposure while allowing beneficial daylight and natural ventilation. Trees, vegetation, canopies, and other landscape elements can provide shade and reduce heat accumulation around buildings. The selection and arrangement of ground surfaces can also affect surface temperatures and the microclimate surrounding occupied spaces. Natural ventilation and airflow are additional considerations in environmentally responsive site planning. Building orientation, spacing, landscape elements, and surrounding structures can influence wind movement and the availability of natural ventilation opportunities. Careful arrangement of buildings can improve airflow while avoiding excessive exposure to undesirable winds. Site planning can also influence stormwater management through appropriate grading, permeable surfaces, drainage systems, and landscape-based water management strategies. Despite its importance, site planning may be influenced by land constraints, development density, economic considerations, existing infrastructure, and competing functional requirements. Poorly planned sites may contribute to excessive solar heat gain, reduced airflow, increased surface temperatures, inadequate shading, and inefficient stormwater management. Integrating environmental considerations from the early stages of site planning can help address these challenges and improve the relationship between buildings and their surrounding environments. The study aims to assess how site planning influences building environmental performance and identify site-planning strategies that can contribute to improved environmental conditions. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, landscape designers, developers, and other built-environment professionals in making environmentally responsive site-planning decisions. Ultimately, the study seeks to promote building developments that achieve improved thermal comfort, natural ventilation, energy efficiency, microclimatic conditions, and overall environmental sustainability.
