The Effect of Seating Configuration on Event Hall Functionality

Abstract

Seating configuration is an important architectural consideration in the planning and operation of event halls because it influences how spaces accommodate users, support activities, and facilitate movement. Event halls are often required to host different functions, including conferences, weddings, performances, exhibitions, meetings, and social gatherings, each with varying spatial and seating requirements. Inappropriate seating arrangements can restrict circulation, reduce visibility, create congestion, and limit the flexibility of the space. This study examines the effect of seating configuration on event hall functionality, with emphasis on how different arrangements influence the usability and performance of event spaces. The study assesses common seating configurations, including theatre-style, classroom-style, banquet, boardroom, U-shaped, cabaret, and flexible arrangements. Attention is given to the relationship between seating layout and factors such as space utilization, occupant capacity, circulation, visibility, accessibility, and interaction. The study also considers the ability of event halls to accommodate different activities without extensive modifications to furniture arrangements or internal layouts. Circulation is a major factor influencing the functionality of event halls. The study examines how seating arrangements affect movement between entrances, seats, aisles, exits, service areas, stages, and other functional spaces. Adequate aisle widths, clear circulation paths, appropriate spacing between seats, and strategically positioned exits are considered essential for ensuring safe and efficient movement. The influence of seating density on crowd circulation and emergency evacuation is also examined. The study further investigates the relationship between seating configuration and user experience. Factors such as viewing angles, sightlines, acoustic conditions, interpersonal interaction, comfort, and accessibility are considered in evaluating different seating arrangements. Particular attention is given to how seating layouts can support the specific requirements of different events while maintaining acceptable levels of comfort and visibility. The study also recognizes the importance of providing suitable seating positions for persons with disabilities and other users with specific mobility needs. Flexibility is another important consideration in event hall functionality because many facilities are expected to accommodate multiple types of activities. The study examines the ease with which furniture can be rearranged, stored, or adapted to create different spatial configurations. Factors such as furniture dimensions, storage facilities, floor finishes, structural column locations, service access, and available support spaces may influence the practicality of changing seating arrangements. Efficiently planned flexible spaces can improve the operational value and utilization of event halls. The study concludes that seating configuration has a significant influence on event hall functionality by affecting capacity, circulation, visibility, accessibility, comfort, interaction, and spatial flexibility. Appropriate seating arrangements should respond to the functional requirements of individual events while maintaining safety and user comfort. The study recommends flexible seating systems, adequate circulation spaces, clear sightlines, accessible seating provisions, appropriate aisle planning, and sufficient furniture storage to improve the functional performance and adaptability of event halls.
