The Effect of Residential Landscaping on Neighbourhood Environmental Quality
Abstract
Residential landscaping is an important component of neighbourhood environmental quality because it influences the visual, ecological, climatic, and social conditions of residential areas. Rapid urban development and increasing building density can result in reduced vegetation, extensive paved surfaces, poor drainage, and increased exposure to heat and environmental pollution. Appropriate landscaping around homes and within shared residential spaces can help address some of these challenges by introducing vegetation, shade, permeable surfaces, and other natural elements. This study examines the effect of residential landscaping on neighbourhood environmental quality, with emphasis on its environmental and functional contributions. The study assesses the landscape characteristics of selected residential neighbourhoods, considering factors such as vegetation coverage, tree distribution, lawn areas, planting patterns, paved surfaces, drainage, boundary treatments, and open-space provision. The research examines how variations in these features influence the overall environmental condition of residential areas. Attention is also given to the relationship between private residential landscapes, communal open spaces, streetscapes, and the wider neighbourhood environment. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of vegetation in regulating neighbourhood microclimatic conditions. Trees and other forms of vegetation can provide shade, reduce surface temperatures, improve outdoor thermal conditions, and contribute to localized environmental cooling. The study considers how tree canopy coverage, planting density, species selection, and landscape arrangement influence solar exposure, airflow, humidity, and heat accumulation within residential environments. The potential contribution of vegetation to reducing the effects of urban heat is also examined. The research further investigates the ecological and environmental functions of residential landscaping. Vegetated and permeable areas can improve stormwater infiltration, reduce surface runoff, support biodiversity, and contribute to localized air-quality improvement. The study also examines how landscape design can influence soil protection, drainage performance, and the overall balance between built and natural surfaces. However, excessive hard landscaping, inappropriate plant selection, poor drainage, and inadequate maintenance may reduce environmental benefits and create additional neighbourhood challenges. In addition to environmental performance, the study considers the visual and social effects of residential landscaping. Well-maintained landscapes can improve neighbourhood appearance, create attractive outdoor spaces, encourage social interaction, and contribute to residents' sense of place and environmental satisfaction. The research examines factors such as landscape maintenance, accessibility, privacy, security, and the relationship between residential gardens and shared neighbourhood spaces. These factors are considered important in determining the long-term effectiveness of residential landscaping. The study aims to assess the relationship between residential landscaping and neighbourhood environmental quality and identify landscape strategies that can improve the performance of residential environments. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, landscape designers, planners, developers, and residents in integrating vegetation, permeable surfaces, shade, and appropriate landscape management into residential developments. Effective residential landscaping can contribute to cooler, healthier, more attractive, and environmentally resilient neighbourhoods.
