The Effect of Residential Compound Layout on Neighbourhood Social Interaction
Abstract
Residential compound layout plays an important role in shaping how residents interact with one another and with the wider neighbourhood environment. The arrangement of dwelling units, shared outdoor areas, entrances, pedestrian routes, parking spaces, and boundary elements can influence opportunities for informal encounters and community activities. Well-organized compounds may encourage visibility, accessibility, and social contact, while poorly planned layouts may promote isolation or create physical and social barriers. Understanding this relationship is therefore important for creating residential environments that support positive neighbourhood interaction. This study examines the effect of residential compound layout on neighbourhood social interaction, with emphasis on the spatial organization of shared and semi-private areas. It considers the arrangement of housing units, courtyards, walkways, entrances, recreational areas, parking zones, and communal facilities. Attention is given to how these spatial elements influence the frequency, duration, and nature of interactions among residents and between residents and neighbouring communities. The study examines factors such as spatial proximity, visibility, pedestrian accessibility, building orientation, shared-space configuration, and the relationship between private and communal areas. Housing units that face common spaces or pedestrian routes may provide greater opportunities for casual encounters and informal communication. Conversely, excessive physical separation, poorly connected spaces, or strongly enclosed compounds may reduce opportunities for interaction and limit residents' engagement with their surroundings. The environmental quality of residential compounds is also considered in relation to social use. Landscaping, shaded areas, seating, lighting, vegetation, drainage, surface quality, and thermal comfort can influence whether residents choose to spend time in shared outdoor spaces. Comfortable and attractive environments may encourage outdoor activities and social gatherings, while poorly maintained, exposed, or uncomfortable spaces may discourage prolonged use. The relationship between environmental conditions and patterns of social activity is therefore examined. The study further considers the balance between social interaction, privacy, security, and residential functionality. Excessive openness may reduce residents' sense of privacy, while excessive enclosure may limit social contact and neighbourhood connectivity. The location of entrances, boundary walls, gates, parking areas, and communal facilities can influence how residents encounter one another and how easily they participate in shared activities. Effective compound planning therefore requires an appropriate balance between private, semi-private, and communal spaces. The study aims to assess how residential compound layout influences neighbourhood social interaction and to identify spatial characteristics that encourage positive community engagement. The findings are expected to contribute to residential planning approaches that integrate accessibility, privacy, security, environmental comfort, and social connectivity. The research may assist architects, housing developers, urban planners, and residential designers in creating compound layouts that provide meaningful opportunities for interaction while maintaining the functional and private requirements of residents.
