The Effect of Residential Building Orientation on Occupant Comfort
Abstract
Building orientation is an important architectural consideration that influences the environmental performance and comfort of residential buildings. The direction in which a building is positioned determines its exposure to solar radiation, prevailing winds, daylight, and external environmental conditions. Inappropriate orientation can contribute to excessive heat gain, glare, poor natural ventilation, and uncomfortable indoor conditions. This study examines the effect of residential building orientation on occupant comfort, with emphasis on how orientation influences thermal, visual, and indoor environmental conditions. The study focuses on the relationship between building orientation and exposure to environmental factors such as solar radiation and prevailing wind patterns. Different orientations are assessed in relation to the amount and distribution of sunlight received by building façades, roofs, windows, and internal spaces. The position of bedrooms, living areas, kitchens, and other residential spaces is also considered, as spatial organization can influence how occupants experience environmental conditions throughout the day. Particular attention is given to the influence of orientation on thermal comfort. Building façades facing different directions may receive varying levels of solar radiation, resulting in differences in indoor temperature and heat accumulation. Appropriate orientation can help reduce unwanted solar heat gain while supporting opportunities for natural ventilation and passive cooling. The study therefore considers orientation as an important passive design strategy for improving indoor thermal conditions and reducing dependence on mechanical cooling. The study also examines the relationship between building orientation, daylight availability, glare, and visual comfort. Properly oriented residential buildings can provide adequate natural lighting while limiting excessive direct sunlight and visual discomfort. The positioning and orientation of windows are considered alongside shading devices, room functions, and surrounding buildings. These factors are important in determining whether orientation contributes positively to daylight quality and occupant visual comfort. Other factors influencing the relationship between orientation and occupant comfort include local climate, building form, surrounding vegetation, neighbouring structures, window-to-wall ratio, shading, construction materials, and landscape configuration. Orientation alone may not guarantee comfortable indoor conditions where other design elements are poorly coordinated. The study therefore considers building orientation as part of an integrated passive design approach in which environmental strategies work together to improve residential performance. The study aims to assess the effect of residential building orientation on occupant comfort and identify orientations and complementary design strategies that can enhance indoor environmental quality. The findings are expected to assist architects, housing developers, and building professionals in making informed decisions during residential planning and design. The study also seeks to promote climate-responsive residential buildings that achieve improved thermal and visual comfort while reducing energy consumption and dependence on artificial environmental controls.
