The Effect of Poor Waste Management on the Quality of Urban Public Spaces
Abstract
Poor waste management is a significant environmental and urban design challenge that can negatively affect the quality, functionality, and attractiveness of public spaces. Urban parks, streets, plazas, markets, and recreational areas require effective waste collection, storage, and disposal systems to remain clean, safe, and usable. However, inadequate waste infrastructure, irregular collection, indiscriminate dumping, and poor maintenance often result in litter accumulation and environmental degradation. These conditions can reduce the visual quality of public spaces and discourage their use by residents and visitors. This study examines the effect of poor waste management on the physical and environmental quality of urban public spaces. It focuses on how waste accumulation influences cleanliness, pedestrian movement, visual appearance, odour conditions, sanitation, and general user experience. The study also considers the relationship between waste management practices and the ability of public spaces to support social interaction, recreation, commercial activities, and community events. Understanding these relationships is important for developing public spaces that are both functional and environmentally sustainable. Poor waste management can also contribute to blocked drainage systems, pest infestation, unpleasant odours, and localized environmental pollution. The presence of improperly disposed waste may interfere with pedestrian circulation and reduce the accessibility of public facilities and open spaces. In addition, overflowing waste containers and scattered refuse can create negative perceptions of neglect and reduce users' sense of comfort and safety. These effects demonstrate that waste management should be considered an integral component of urban public-space planning and design. The study further explores how the design and location of waste collection facilities influence waste disposal behaviour and public-space quality. Adequate waste bins, appropriate collection points, accessible service routes, clear signage, and sufficient storage areas can support more effective waste management. Public awareness, community participation, regular maintenance, and enforcement of waste disposal regulations are also important in reducing inappropriate waste disposal. Integrating these measures into public-space planning can improve both environmental conditions and user satisfaction. Poor waste management is particularly problematic in rapidly growing urban areas where population growth, commercial activities, and increasing waste generation place pressure on existing infrastructure. Inadequate institutional coordination, limited waste collection capacity, poor maintenance practices, and insufficient public awareness can further intensify the problem. Addressing these challenges requires cooperation among urban planners, architects, environmental agencies, local authorities, waste management providers, and community members. The study aims to establish the relationship between waste management practices and the quality of urban public spaces while identifying design and management strategies for improving environmental conditions. It is expected to contribute to a better understanding of how effective waste management can enhance cleanliness, functionality, aesthetics, health, and user experience in urban public spaces. The findings can support architects, urban designers, and planning authorities in developing cleaner, healthier, and more attractive public environments.
