The Effect of Mechanical Ventilation on Indoor Environmental Quality
Abstract
Mechanical ventilation is an important component of building environmental systems because it regulates the movement and exchange of air within enclosed spaces. By supplying outdoor air and removing stale or contaminated air, mechanical ventilation can influence indoor air quality, thermal conditions, humidity, and occupant comfort. Its effectiveness is particularly important in buildings with limited opportunities for natural ventilation. Understanding the relationship between mechanical ventilation and indoor environmental quality is therefore essential for achieving healthy, comfortable, and functional indoor spaces. This study examines the effect of mechanical ventilation on indoor environmental quality by assessing how ventilation systems influence conditions experienced by building occupants. It considers factors such as ventilation rates, air distribution, outdoor air supply, filtration, temperature control, relative humidity, and system operation. Attention is given to the interaction between mechanical ventilation systems and the physical characteristics, occupancy patterns, and functional requirements of different building spaces. The study further explores the influence of mechanical ventilation on indoor air quality. Adequate outdoor air supply and effective filtration can help reduce concentrations of carbon dioxide, particulate matter, odours, and other indoor pollutants. Conversely, insufficient ventilation, poor air distribution, or inadequate system maintenance may contribute to pollutant accumulation and uneven environmental conditions. The study therefore considers ventilation performance as an important factor in maintaining acceptable indoor air conditions. In addition to air quality, mechanical ventilation can influence thermal comfort and humidity levels. Properly designed systems can distribute conditioned air and maintain appropriate indoor temperatures, while excessive or inadequate airflow may create drafts, temperature variations, or discomfort. Humidity control is also important because excessive moisture can contribute to condensation and mould growth, while excessively dry conditions may affect occupant comfort. The study considers these relationships as part of overall indoor environmental quality. The effectiveness of mechanical ventilation depends on factors such as building type, climate, occupancy density, system design, maintenance practices, energy requirements, and operating schedules. Poorly maintained filters, ducts, fans, and control systems can reduce ventilation performance and increase energy consumption. Effective system design must therefore balance indoor air quality, thermal comfort, energy efficiency, maintenance requirements, and the specific needs of building occupants. The study concludes that mechanical ventilation can significantly influence indoor environmental quality by controlling air exchange, pollutant concentrations, temperature, and humidity. Properly designed, operated, and maintained ventilation systems can support healthier and more comfortable indoor environments while contributing to building functionality and energy performance. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, building services engineers, facility managers, and building operators in developing ventilation strategies that effectively support indoor environmental quality.
