The Effect of Irregular Floor Plans on Furniture Arrangement

Abstract

Floor-plan geometry plays an important role in determining how effectively furniture can be arranged within interior spaces. Irregular floor plans, characterized by angled walls, unusual corners, varying room dimensions, or non-orthogonal configurations, may create challenges for the placement and organization of furniture. While such geometries can provide architectural character and respond to specific site conditions, they may also reduce usable floor area and limit flexibility in interior arrangement. Assessing the relationship between irregular floor plans and furniture arrangement is therefore important for improving interior functionality. This study examines the effect of irregular floor plans on furniture arrangement in buildings by assessing how variations in room geometry influence the positioning and organization of furniture. Factors such as room shape, wall angles, dimensions, circulation space, openings, structural elements, and fixed installations are considered. The study evaluates the extent to which irregular configurations affect the ability to accommodate standard furniture sizes and establish functional arrangements. Attention is also given to differences between regular and irregular spatial configurations. The research further investigates the relationship between floor-plan irregularity and circulation efficiency. Furniture arrangements must provide adequate clearance for movement while supporting the intended activities of each space. Irregular corners and angled walls may create residual areas that are difficult to furnish effectively, potentially resulting in restricted movement or inefficient use of floor area. The study therefore examines circulation paths, furniture spacing, access to doors and windows, and relationships between furniture groupings within irregular rooms. In addition to functional considerations, the study considers the influence of irregular floor plans on flexibility, comfort, and visual organization. Effective furniture arrangements should accommodate different activities, allow for adjustments, and maintain appropriate relationships between users and architectural elements. The positioning of furniture relative to natural lighting, ventilation openings, electrical points, storage areas, and focal features is also considered. These factors help determine whether irregular floor plans can support comfortable and adaptable interior environments. Challenges associated with furnishing irregular floor plans may include limited wall lengths, awkward corners, restricted furniture placement options, wasted floor areas, and difficulties accommodating standard furniture dimensions. These conditions can become more significant in residential, office, educational, and other buildings where furniture arrangements change according to user needs. Understanding these challenges can support the development of planning strategies that coordinate room geometry with furniture requirements from the early stages of architectural design. The study aims to establish how irregular floor-plan configurations affect furniture arrangement and identify design considerations that can improve the functional use of irregular spaces. Its findings are expected to assist architects, interior designers, and building users in developing furniture arrangements that maintain effective circulation, comfort, flexibility, and space utilization. The study contributes to user-centred architectural design by emphasizing the importance of considering furniture requirements alongside floor-plan geometry during the planning and design of building interiors.
