The Effect of Community Gardens on Neighbourhood Interaction
Abstract
Community gardens are increasingly recognized as important elements of neighbourhood development, providing shared spaces where residents can engage in gardening, recreation, social activities, and informal interaction. Beyond their environmental and food-production functions, these spaces can contribute to stronger social relationships and improved community cohesion. In rapidly developing urban areas, where opportunities for meaningful neighbourhood interaction may be limited, community gardens can provide accessible settings for residents to meet and participate in shared activities. Understanding their influence is therefore important for creating socially responsive and inclusive neighbourhood environments. This study examines the effect of community gardens on neighbourhood interaction, with particular attention to how shared green spaces influence the frequency, quality, and nature of social relationships among residents. It considers the physical characteristics, accessibility, location, and management of community gardens and how these factors affect their use by different groups. The study also explores the extent to which participation in gardening and communal activities encourages residents to communicate, collaborate, and develop relationships with other members of the neighbourhood. The design and organization of community gardens can significantly influence opportunities for social interaction. Features such as communal seating areas, shared planting spaces, pedestrian accessibility, shaded areas, gathering spaces, and clear visual connections can encourage residents to remain within the space and interact with others. The presence of shared facilities and flexible spaces may also support activities involving different age groups and social backgrounds. Consequently, the physical configuration of community gardens can play an important role in transforming ordinary open spaces into active social environments. In addition to physical characteristics, social and cultural factors can influence the effectiveness of community gardens in promoting neighbourhood interaction. Community participation, shared responsibilities, gardening programmes, cultural activities, and local management practices can strengthen residents' sense of ownership and encourage continued engagement. Regular interaction within these spaces may contribute to trust, cooperation, knowledge sharing, and informal support networks. However, differences in access, participation, maintenance responsibilities, and perceptions of safety may affect how inclusive and socially beneficial community gardens become. The study also considers challenges that may limit the ability of community gardens to support neighbourhood interaction. Poor maintenance, inadequate security, limited accessibility, insufficient facilities, lack of community participation, and conflicts over management can reduce their attractiveness and effectiveness. Where community gardens are poorly located or designed without consideration of local needs, their use may become limited to particular groups. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated approach that combines appropriate spatial planning, inclusive design, community participation, effective management, and regular maintenance. The study aims to provide an understanding of how community gardens can contribute to stronger neighbourhood interaction and improved social cohesion. It is expected to demonstrate that well-designed and properly managed community gardens can function as important social infrastructure within residential communities. The findings can inform architects, urban planners, landscape designers, community organizations, and housing developers in the planning of neighbourhood open spaces. Ultimately, the study highlights the potential of community gardens to create more interactive, inclusive, and socially connected neighbourhood environments.
