The Effect of Ceiling Design on Occupant Perception of Interior Spaces
Abstract
Ceiling design is an important component of interior architecture because it influences the visual character, spatial perception, environmental quality, and psychological experience of occupants. As a prominent surface within interior spaces, ceilings can affect how users perceive dimensions, proportion, openness, enclosure, and visual comfort. Differences in ceiling height, form, material, colour, texture, and lighting integration can therefore contribute to variations in how interior environments are experienced. This study examines the effect of ceiling design on occupant perception of interior spaces, focusing on the relationship between ceiling characteristics and users' spatial experiences. It considers factors such as ceiling height, configuration, shape, material, colour, texture, detailing, and the integration of lighting and ventilation systems. The study seeks to understand how these design attributes influence perceptions of spaciousness, comfort, privacy, visual interest, and overall interior quality. The research also explores the influence of ceiling height and geometry on perceived spatial dimensions. Higher ceilings may create a greater sense of openness and volume, while lower ceilings may contribute to feelings of intimacy and enclosure depending on the function of the space. Changes in ceiling levels, recessed areas, suspended elements, and exposed structural components can further establish visual hierarchy and influence how occupants interpret different zones within an interior. Material and colour selection are also considered important factors in occupant perception. Reflective or light-coloured ceiling surfaces may influence the distribution of light and contribute to perceptions of brightness, while darker or textured finishes can create different visual and atmospheric effects. The acoustic properties of ceiling materials are also relevant, as sound absorption and reverberation can influence comfort and the perceived quality of interior environments. The study further considers the relationship between ceiling design and building function. Appropriate ceiling configurations may vary between residential spaces, offices, educational buildings, healthcare facilities, religious environments, and commercial interiors. The integration of artificial lighting, natural ventilation, air-conditioning systems, acoustic treatments, and architectural detailing should therefore be coordinated with ceiling design to ensure that aesthetic qualities do not compromise functional and environmental performance. The study aims to provide a clearer understanding of how ceiling design influences occupant perception and experience of interior spaces. Its findings are expected to assist architects and interior designers in making informed decisions concerning ceiling proportions, materials, colours, forms, and integrated building systems. By considering both perceptual and functional requirements, ceiling design can contribute to interiors that are visually engaging, comfortable, appropriately scaled, and responsive to occupant needs.
