The Effect of Building Layout on User Movement Patterns

Abstract

Building layout is an important architectural factor that influences how users navigate, interact with, and move through indoor spaces. The arrangement of rooms, corridors, entrances, stairs, lifts, and shared spaces can either facilitate efficient movement or create confusion, congestion, and unnecessary travel distances. As buildings accommodate different categories of users and activities, effective spatial organization is necessary to support convenient and understandable circulation. This study examines the effect of building layout on user movement patterns, with emphasis on how spatial configuration influences circulation behaviour and movement efficiency. The study focuses on the relationship between spatial arrangement and movement patterns within buildings. Key elements considered include entrance location, corridor configuration, room placement, circulation hierarchy, vertical circulation, spatial connectivity, visibility, and the relationship between primary and secondary spaces. These features are assessed in relation to how users identify destinations, select routes, and move between different areas. The study also considers how variations in building layout may influence directness, accessibility, and the frequency of movement through particular spaces. Particular attention is given to wayfinding and spatial legibility. Buildings with clear circulation routes, visible destinations, identifiable entrances, and logical spatial relationships may enable users to navigate with greater ease. Conversely, complex layouts, hidden entrances, poorly connected spaces, and unclear circulation routes may increase uncertainty and lead to inefficient movement. The study therefore considers the extent to which spatial organization supports intuitive navigation and reduces unnecessary movement. The study also examines the influence of building layout on movement intensity and patterns within different functional areas. Spaces such as reception areas, corridors, staircases, waiting areas, common spaces, and service zones may experience different levels of user movement depending on their location and connectivity. Appropriate zoning can help separate major circulation flows from areas requiring privacy or concentration. The relationship between spatial hierarchy, user movement, and functional requirements is therefore considered in assessing building performance. Other factors that may influence movement patterns include building occupancy, user characteristics, furniture arrangement, signage, accessibility requirements, security controls, and the purpose of individual spaces. The movement needs of staff, visitors, customers, students, elderly users, and persons with disabilities may differ considerably. The study recognizes that effective building layouts should accommodate diverse movement requirements while maintaining safety, accessibility, comfort, and functional efficiency. The study aims to assess the effect of building layout on user movement patterns and identify spatial planning characteristics that support efficient, accessible, and intuitive circulation. The findings are expected to assist architects, planners, interior designers, and facility managers in developing building layouts that respond effectively to user movement behaviour. The study also contributes to improved understanding of how spatial configuration can influence circulation efficiency, wayfinding, accessibility, and the overall usability of buildings.
