The Effect of Building Layout on Accessibility in Community Development Centres
Abstract
Community development centres provide spaces for education, skills training, meetings, recreation, social interaction, and community support. The building layout of these facilities can significantly influence how easily users access different spaces and services within the centre. Poorly organized layouts may create physical barriers, confusing circulation routes, excessive travel distances, and difficulties for people with mobility or sensory limitations. This study therefore examines the effect of building layout on accessibility in community development centres. The study focuses on the spatial arrangement and relationships among major areas within community development centres, including entrances, reception areas, multipurpose halls, classrooms, meeting rooms, offices, recreational spaces, toilets, storage areas, and outdoor facilities. The location and connectivity of these spaces are examined in relation to user movement and access. Particular attention is given to whether important facilities can be reached through clear, direct, and unobstructed circulation routes. The research considers how entrance placement, corridor configuration, room positioning, vertical circulation, and spatial hierarchy influence accessibility. Well-organized layouts can reduce unnecessary movement and create intuitive connections between frequently used spaces. The study also examines the provision of ramps, accessible doorways, lifts where necessary, appropriate corridor widths, handrails, and suitable floor transitions as components of an accessible circulation system. Wayfinding and user orientation are further considered in relation to building layout. Clear visibility of major destinations, logical spatial sequences, identifiable activity zones, and appropriate signage can help users navigate community development centres with greater independence. The relationship between public, semi-public, private, and service areas is also assessed to determine whether zoning supports convenient access while maintaining appropriate privacy and operational control. The study also examines the relationship between accessibility and user experience. An accessible layout should accommodate people with different physical abilities, ages, and activity requirements while supporting safe and comfortable movement. The positioning of seating areas, toilets, service counters, activity spaces, and outdoor areas is considered alongside factors such as lighting, ventilation, safety, and maintenance. These factors can influence whether accessibility provisions remain functional and convenient during everyday use. The study aims to assess the influence of building layout on accessibility in community development centres and identify spatial planning factors that can improve inclusive access. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, facility managers, and community development organizations in the design, evaluation, and improvement of such facilities. By integrating accessible circulation, logical spatial organization, effective wayfinding, inclusive facilities, and user-centred planning, community development centres can provide more equitable and functional environments for diverse community users.
