The Effect of Building Entrance Visibility on User Orientation
Abstract
Building entrances serve as important transitional points between external and internal environments and play a significant role in helping users understand and navigate buildings. The visibility of an entrance from surrounding approaches can influence how easily users identify the correct point of access and develop an understanding of the building's organization. Poorly visible entrances may create confusion, increase search time, and negatively affect users' initial experiences. Assessing the relationship between entrance visibility and user orientation is therefore important for improving the legibility and usability of contemporary buildings. This study examines the effect of building entrance visibility on user orientation, focusing on how architectural characteristics influence users' ability to identify, approach, and access building entrances. Factors such as entrance prominence, visibility from pedestrian approaches, building configuration, signage, lighting, landscaping, spatial hierarchy, and visual connections are considered. The study also examines how these characteristics contribute to users' ability to form mental representations of the building and understand its overall spatial organization. The study further explores the relationship between entrance visibility and wayfinding behaviour. Clearly identifiable entrances can provide users with an immediate reference point from which they can interpret circulation routes, reception areas, major activity spaces, and other important destinations. Visual cues such as entrance canopies, architectural emphasis, changes in material, lighting, signage, and distinctive forms can strengthen entrance recognition and improve users' directional decisions. The surrounding site environment also influences entrance visibility and user orientation. Approaches, pedestrian pathways, parking areas, landscaping, boundary treatments, adjacent buildings, and changes in level can either enhance or obstruct visual access to entrances. Appropriate integration between site planning and building design can create clear visual sequences that guide users naturally from arrival points toward the building entrance and subsequently into internal circulation systems. Poor entrance visibility may result in hesitation, unnecessary movement, dependence on signage, and difficulty locating desired destinations, particularly for first-time visitors and users unfamiliar with the building. These challenges may be more significant in large public, institutional, commercial, and complex buildings where multiple entrances and circulation routes are provided. Improving entrance visibility therefore requires careful consideration of architectural form, spatial hierarchy, visual connectivity, and environmental cues. The study aims to assess how building entrance visibility affects user orientation and to identify the architectural and site-planning features that contribute to effective entrance recognition. The findings are expected to assist architects, planners, and building managers in developing more legible and user-oriented environments. Ultimately, the study seeks to demonstrate how deliberate entrance design can improve wayfinding, reduce user confusion, and enhance the overall usability and accessibility of buildings.
