Relationship Between Pedestrian Infrastructure and Public-Space Usage
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between pedestrian infrastructure and public-space usage. Pedestrian infrastructure provides the physical conditions that support walking, movement, access, and interaction within public environments. Features such as walkways, footpaths, crossings, sidewalks, ramps, paving materials, lighting, drainage, and pedestrian connections may influence how easily and comfortably people move through and use public spaces. The study will assess pedestrian infrastructure and determine its relationship with public-space usage in selected urban public spaces. Attention will be given to the continuity, width, surface condition, accessibility, safety, connectivity, lighting, drainage, and overall condition of pedestrian facilities. Public-space usage will be assessed through indicators such as pedestrian volume, frequency of use, duration of stay, movement patterns, and the range of activities undertaken within the selected spaces. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected public spaces will be identified using an appropriate sampling technique and assessed through physical observation, pedestrian counts, infrastructure audits, activity mapping, and structured questionnaires administered to users where applicable. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and comparative tests will be applied to determine the relationship between pedestrian infrastructure and public-space usage. The study is expected to reveal a measurable relationship between the quality of pedestrian infrastructure and patterns of public-space usage. Public spaces with continuous, accessible, safe, well-maintained, and adequately connected pedestrian facilities are expected to record higher levels of pedestrian activity and more diverse patterns of use. Poorly maintained walkways, inadequate crossings, discontinuous routes, poor drainage, and insufficient lighting may discourage pedestrian movement and reduce the attractiveness and usability of public spaces. The findings will be useful to architects, urban planners, landscape architects, transport planners, municipal authorities, facility managers, and other professionals involved in public-space planning and development. The study may provide useful information for improving pedestrian infrastructure as a means of supporting active movement, accessibility, social interaction, and effective utilization of public spaces. It may also contribute to the planning of more inclusive and pedestrian-friendly urban environments. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between pedestrian infrastructure and public-space usage. It is recommended that pedestrian facilities should be designed and maintained to provide continuous, safe, accessible, comfortable, and well-connected routes within public spaces. Further studies involving different urban areas, public-space types, and user groups are recommended to provide broader information on pedestrian infrastructure and public-space utilization.
