Relationship Between Entrance Orientation and Visitor Movement in Public Buildings

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between entrance orientation and visitor movement in public buildings, with emphasis on how the direction and positioning of building entrances influence the movement, accessibility, and circulation patterns of visitors. Entrance orientation is an important aspect of architectural planning because it determines how users approach buildings, identify entry points, connect with internal circulation routes, and transition from outdoor to indoor spaces. Appropriate entrance orientation can support clear movement and reduce unnecessary circulation, while poorly positioned entrances may create confusion, congestion, and inefficient movement. The study will assess the relationship between entrance orientation and visitor movement in selected public buildings. Attention will be given to the direction of entrances, their relationship with approach roads, pedestrian walkways, parking areas, public spaces, reception areas, corridors, stairs, lifts, and major activity spaces. Visitor movement will be assessed in terms of movement direction, pedestrian flow, travel distance, route selection, congestion, waiting time, ease of navigation, and accessibility. The study will also consider entrance visibility, surrounding site features, building function, and visitor volume. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of selected public buildings and their visitors will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through physical observation, entrance orientation measurements, pedestrian movement counts, circulation mapping, photographic documentation, and structured questionnaires administered to visitors and relevant building personnel. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation techniques will be applied to determine the relationship between entrance orientation and visitor movement. The study is expected to reveal that entrance orientation has a measurable relationship with visitor movement within public buildings. Entrances that are clearly positioned in relation to major pedestrian approaches, circulation routes, reception areas, and important activity spaces are expected to support more direct and organized visitor movement. Entrances that are poorly oriented or disconnected from major approach routes may result in longer movement distances, unnecessary route changes, congestion, and difficulty identifying appropriate circulation paths. Other factors such as building layout, entrance visibility, signage, pedestrian volume, parking arrangement, and site configuration may also influence visitor movement. The findings will be useful to architects, urban planners, interior designers, facility managers, public institutions, developers, and other professionals involved in the planning and management of public buildings. The study may provide practical information for improving the relationship between building entrances, site circulation, pedestrian approaches, and internal movement systems. It may also support the design of public buildings that provide clearer access, improved wayfinding, efficient circulation, and better visitor experience. The study will conclude by establishing the relationship between entrance orientation and visitor movement in public buildings and emphasizing the importance of coordinating entrance direction and location with pedestrian approaches and internal circulation. It is recommended that entrance orientation be carefully considered alongside site access, pedestrian pathways, reception areas, vertical circulation, signage, and major building functions during the design process. Further studies should examine entrance orientation and visitor movement across different types of public buildings and varying patterns of user activity.
