Influence of Construction Material Storage on Material Wastage
Abstract
The study examines the influence of construction material storage on material wastage in building projects, with emphasis on how the manner in which materials are received, handled, stored, protected, and issued affects losses during construction. Construction materials constitute a significant proportion of project expenditure, and improper storage may expose materials to damage, deterioration, contamination, theft, moisture, weather conditions, and unnecessary handling. Effective storage practices are therefore important for reducing material losses and improving the efficient use of resources on construction sites. The study will assess construction material storage practices and examine their influence on material wastage. Attention will be given to the storage of materials such as cement, sand, aggregates, timber, reinforcement bars, blocks, tiles, finishes, and other commonly used building materials. Storage factors to be assessed will include storage location, stacking methods, protection from weather, ventilation, moisture control, material segregation, accessibility, inventory arrangement, security, handling procedures, and the duration materials remain in storage. Material wastage will be assessed through damaged materials, deterioration, breakage, contamination, spoilage, loss, and unused materials. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of selected building projects, contractors, site managers, storekeepers, quantity surveyors, and construction workers will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through site observations, storage-condition assessments, material inventory records, material usage records, photographs, structured questionnaires, and interviews. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation techniques will be applied to determine the relationship between storage practices and material wastage. The study is expected to reveal that appropriate storage practices are associated with reduced construction material wastage. Proper stacking, adequate protection from weather, suitable ventilation, moisture control, organized storage locations, effective inventory management, and secure storage are expected to reduce deterioration, breakage, contamination, and material losses. Conversely, poor storage conditions, improper stacking, exposure to rain and moisture, overcrowding, inadequate security, and poor material handling may contribute to increased wastage and additional project expenditure. The findings will be useful to architects, quantity surveyors, contractors, builders, project managers, site supervisors, storekeepers, and other construction professionals involved in material management. The study may provide useful information for improving material storage procedures and reducing avoidable losses on construction sites. It may also support better inventory control, site organization, procurement planning, and cost management while promoting more efficient and sustainable use of construction resources. The study will conclude by establishing the influence of construction material storage on material wastage and emphasizing the importance of proper storage throughout the construction process. It is recommended that construction projects provide suitable storage facilities, appropriate stacking arrangements, weather protection, adequate security, proper inventory systems, and trained personnel for material handling and storage. Further studies should examine storage-related wastage across different construction materials, building types, and project scales.
