Influence of Building Spacing on Air Movement in Residential Neighbourhoods
Abstract
The study examines the influence of building spacing on air movement in residential neighbourhoods, with emphasis on how the distance and arrangement between buildings affect outdoor airflow and ventilation conditions within residential environments. Building spacing is an important component of neighbourhood planning because the positioning of buildings can either facilitate or restrict the movement of air between structures. Understanding this relationship is therefore important for creating residential environments that support natural airflow, outdoor comfort, and healthier environmental conditions. The study will assess selected characteristics of building spacing and their relationship with air movement within residential neighbourhoods. The assessment will consider factors such as distance between buildings, building orientation, building height, building arrangement, street width, open-space configuration, and the presence of vegetation or other physical obstructions. Air movement will be assessed using indicators such as air velocity, airflow direction, air temperature, relative humidity, and users’ perception of outdoor airflow and thermal comfort. A descriptive comparative research design will be adopted for the study. Selected residential neighbourhoods or building clusters with varying spacing patterns will be identified using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through physical measurements, site observation, building-spacing assessments, environmental monitoring, photographic documentation, and structured questionnaires where necessary. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation techniques will be applied to determine the relationship between building spacing and air movement. The study is expected to reveal differences in airflow conditions among residential areas with varying building spacing. Neighbourhoods with adequate spacing and appropriate building orientation are expected to experience better air movement and improved outdoor environmental conditions, while closely spaced buildings may restrict airflow and create areas of reduced air circulation. However, the observed airflow patterns may also be influenced by building height, prevailing wind direction, street configuration, vegetation, topography, and surrounding structures. The findings will be useful to architects, urban planners, landscape architects, housing developers, and other professionals involved in residential neighbourhood planning and design. The study will provide information on how building spacing can be considered alongside orientation, building height, street layout, and open-space provision to support natural air movement. It may also contribute to climate-responsive neighbourhood planning and the development of residential environments that promote outdoor comfort and improved environmental quality. The study will conclude by establishing the influence of building spacing on air movement in residential neighbourhoods and identifying spacing conditions associated with more favourable airflow. It is recommended that appropriate building setbacks and spatial relationships should be considered during residential neighbourhood planning to avoid excessive obstruction of natural air movement. Further studies involving different neighbourhood layouts, building forms, and climatic conditions are recommended to provide broader guidance for climate-responsive residential planning.
