Effect of Road Setback on Noise Exposure in Residential Buildings
Abstract
The study examines the effect of road setback on noise exposure in residential buildings, with emphasis on how the distance between residential buildings and adjoining roads influences the level of traffic-related noise experienced by occupants. Road traffic is an important source of environmental noise in urban and developing areas, particularly along busy roads where vehicle movement, horns, acceleration, and other activities may affect nearby residential environments. Appropriate building setbacks may therefore contribute to reducing the intensity of noise reaching residential buildings and improving indoor environmental conditions. The study will assess the relationship between road setback distance and noise exposure in selected residential buildings. Attention will be given to the distance between building facades and road edges, road characteristics, traffic volume, building orientation, window positions, boundary walls, vegetation, and other physical features that may influence noise transmission. Noise exposure will be assessed through measured sound levels at relevant points within and around residential buildings, while occupants’ perceptions of noise and its effects on residential comfort will also be considered. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of residential buildings located at varying distances from selected roads will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through physical measurements of road setbacks, environmental noise measurements, site observations, photographic documentation, traffic observations, and structured questionnaires administered to selected residents. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation or comparative tests will be applied to determine the relationship between road setback and noise exposure. The study is expected to reveal differences in noise exposure among residential buildings located at different setback distances from roads. Buildings positioned closer to busy roads are expected to experience higher levels of traffic-related noise, while greater setbacks may provide a degree of noise reduction, particularly where adequate open space, vegetation, boundary treatment, or other buffering features are present. The extent of noise exposure may also vary according to traffic volume, road width, vehicle type, building orientation, window configuration, surrounding development, and the presence of physical barriers. The findings will be useful to architects, urban planners, environmental planners, developers, planning authorities, and residential property owners involved in building siting and neighbourhood development. The study may provide useful information for determining appropriate road setbacks and incorporating noise-reduction considerations into residential planning and design. It may also support the development of residential environments with improved acoustic comfort and reduced exposure to traffic-related environmental noise. The study will conclude by establishing the effect of road setback on noise exposure in residential buildings and highlighting the importance of considering road proximity during residential site planning. It is recommended that appropriate setback distances, building orientation, boundary treatments, vegetation, and other noise-reduction strategies be considered when planning residential developments near busy roads. Further studies should examine the combined influence of road setback and building design features on indoor noise levels across different residential environments.
