Effect of On-Site Material Handling on Construction Productivity

Abstract

The study examines the effect of on-site material handling on construction productivity, with emphasis on how the movement, loading, unloading, lifting, transportation, positioning, and distribution of construction materials influence the efficiency of construction activities. Material handling is an important part of building project execution because construction workers frequently spend considerable time moving materials between storage areas and work locations. Inefficient handling practices may increase labour requirements, cause delays, damage materials, create safety risks, and reduce the amount of productive work completed on construction sites. The study will assess on-site material handling practices and examine their effect on construction productivity. Attention will be given to material delivery, unloading procedures, storage locations, movement distances, handling equipment, manual handling, lifting methods, material distribution, accessibility of work areas, and coordination between material supply and construction activities. Construction productivity will be assessed using indicators such as work output, task completion time, labour utilization, material movement time, activity delays, rework, and worker efficiency. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of selected building projects, contractors, site supervisors, construction workers, quantity surveyors, and other relevant professionals will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through site observations, material movement assessments, time studies, project records, structured questionnaires, and interviews. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate comparative and correlation techniques will be applied to determine the relationship between material handling practices and construction productivity. The study is expected to reveal that efficient on-site material handling contributes to improved construction productivity by reducing unnecessary movement, waiting time, material damage, worker fatigue, and delays in supplying materials to work areas. Properly organized storage locations, suitable handling equipment, shorter movement distances, effective material distribution, and coordinated delivery schedules are expected to support smoother construction activities. Poor handling practices may increase material movement time, labour requirements, congestion, wastage, and delays, thereby reducing productivity. The findings will be useful to architects, quantity surveyors, contractors, builders, project managers, site supervisors, construction workers, and other professionals involved in building project management. The study may provide useful information for improving material flow and work organization on construction sites. It may also support better planning of storage areas, handling routes, equipment selection, labour allocation, and construction activities while contributing to improved productivity and resource utilization. The study will conclude by establishing the effect of on-site material handling on construction productivity and emphasizing the importance of efficient material movement and distribution during project execution. It is recommended that construction sites adopt organized storage systems, suitable handling equipment, accessible material routes, proper material planning, and coordinated delivery procedures to reduce unnecessary movement and delays. Further studies should examine material handling practices across different construction activities, building types, and project scales.
