Assessment of Window Opening Types and Their Influence on Indoor Air Movement
Abstract
Natural ventilation is an important component of climate-responsive building design because it can improve indoor air quality, support thermal comfort, and reduce reliance on mechanical cooling systems. Windows are among the primary architectural elements through which natural ventilation is achieved, and their opening types can significantly influence the direction, volume, and distribution of indoor air movement. Different configurations, including casement, sliding, louvre, awning, and pivot windows, provide varying degrees of airflow control. This study assesses window opening types and their influence on indoor air movement, with emphasis on their effectiveness in creating comfortable and well-ventilated interior environments. The study examines the relationship between different window opening configurations and airflow within occupied spaces. Factors such as opening size, operable area, opening angle, window position, room dimensions, ceiling height, and the relationship between inlet and outlet openings are considered. Casement windows, for example, may direct incoming air into a space, while louvre windows can provide adjustable ventilation even during light rain. Sliding and awning windows may provide different levels of opening and airflow depending on their configuration. These characteristics are assessed in relation to indoor air distribution. Cross-ventilation and air movement patterns are important considerations in evaluating window performance. Window openings positioned on opposing or adjacent walls can create more effective airflow paths when supported by suitable prevailing wind conditions. Conversely, poorly positioned or limited openings may produce stagnant zones and uneven air distribution. The study therefore considers how window type interacts with room geometry, building orientation, internal partitions, furniture arrangement, and other openings to influence the movement of air throughout interior spaces. The study also considers the degree of user control provided by different window opening types. Adjustable openings can allow occupants to respond to changing outdoor temperatures, wind conditions, humidity, and personal comfort preferences. However, excessive or uncontrolled airflow may result in discomfort, particularly in areas directly exposed to strong air currents. Window design must therefore balance ventilation performance with protection from rain, glare, noise, insects, and security concerns. Appropriate opening mechanisms can provide occupants with greater control over their indoor environmental conditions. Environmental and climatic factors are further considered because window performance varies according to building location and surrounding conditions. Prevailing wind direction, outdoor temperature, humidity, adjacent buildings, vegetation, and seasonal weather patterns can influence the effectiveness of different opening types. Shading devices, insect screens, security features, and appropriate sill and head heights may also affect how windows are operated and how effectively they support natural ventilation. Integrating window selection with broader passive design strategies can improve indoor environmental performance. The study aims to assess the influence of different window opening types on indoor air movement and to identify architectural considerations for selecting and positioning effective operable windows. The findings are expected to contribute to climate-responsive building design by emphasizing the relationship between window configuration, airflow paths, occupant control, room geometry, and climatic conditions. Appropriate window opening strategies can enhance natural ventilation, improve indoor air quality and thermal comfort, reduce mechanical cooling requirements, and support healthier and more energy-efficient buildings.
