Assessment of Water-Efficient Design Strategies in Public Buildings
Abstract
Water is an essential resource in public buildings, where high occupancy and diverse activities can result in significant water consumption. Efficient water management is therefore important for reducing wastage, lowering operational costs, and supporting sustainable building performance. Water-efficient design strategies can address consumption at the planning and building-design stages through appropriate fixtures, water reuse systems, rainwater harvesting, efficient landscaping, and responsive plumbing systems. This study assesses water-efficient design strategies in public buildings, focusing on architectural and building-service approaches that can reduce potable water consumption. Strategies considered include low-flow fixtures, dual-flush toilets, water-efficient faucets, rainwater harvesting, greywater reuse, water-efficient landscaping, leak detection systems, and appropriate plumbing design. The study also examines the extent to which these strategies are incorporated into public building design and operation. The study further evaluates how spatial planning and functional requirements influence water demand. The location and arrangement of sanitary facilities, kitchens, cleaning areas, landscape zones, and other water-dependent spaces can affect the efficiency of water distribution and management. Appropriate grouping of wet areas and effective plumbing layouts can reduce distribution losses while facilitating maintenance and monitoring of water-use systems. Rainwater harvesting and water reuse are also important components of water-efficient public building design. Roof forms, drainage systems, storage facilities, and treatment systems can be integrated to collect and reuse rainwater for non-potable purposes such as toilet flushing, irrigation, and cleaning. Greywater systems can similarly reduce demand for potable water when appropriately designed, treated, operated, and maintained. Despite the potential benefits of water-efficient strategies, their adoption may be limited by initial costs, inadequate technical knowledge, maintenance requirements, user behaviour, water-quality concerns, and limited awareness. Poorly designed systems may also experience leakage, contamination, inadequate storage, or operational difficulties. Effective implementation therefore requires integration of architectural planning, plumbing design, facility management, user education, and appropriate maintenance procedures. The study aims to assess water-efficient design strategies in public buildings and identify the architectural, technological, and operational measures that can contribute to improved water conservation. The findings are expected to assist architects, engineers, facility managers, developers, and public authorities in incorporating effective water-saving strategies into building projects. Ultimately, the study seeks to promote public buildings that use water more efficiently, reduce operational waste, improve resource management, and contribute to sustainable building performance.
