Assessment of Sustainable Design Strategies in Agricultural Buildings
Abstract
Agricultural buildings support a wide range of activities, including crop production, livestock management, storage, processing, equipment handling, and farm-related administration. Their design can have significant implications for energy consumption, resource use, environmental quality, and long-term operational costs. Sustainable design strategies provide opportunities to reduce environmental impacts while improving the functionality and resilience of agricultural facilities. This study assesses sustainable design strategies in agricultural buildings, with emphasis on energy efficiency, resource conservation, environmental performance, and functional suitability. The study examines architectural strategies that can improve the environmental performance of agricultural buildings, including appropriate building orientation, passive ventilation, daylighting, shading, thermal insulation, efficient building envelopes, and climate-responsive spatial planning. The suitability of these strategies is considered in relation to different agricultural activities and climatic conditions. Particular attention is given to how passive design approaches can reduce dependence on mechanical systems while maintaining suitable conditions for workers, animals, stored products, and equipment. Energy and resource efficiency are also examined as important components of sustainable agricultural building design. The study considers the potential application of renewable energy systems, particularly solar energy, alongside energy-efficient lighting, equipment, and mechanical systems. Water conservation strategies such as rainwater harvesting, efficient water use, wastewater management, and appropriate drainage systems are also considered. These approaches can reduce operational resource consumption and contribute to more resilient agricultural facilities. The research further assesses the use of sustainable and locally available construction materials in agricultural buildings. Material selection is considered in relation to durability, embodied energy, maintenance requirements, availability, cost, and suitability for agricultural environments. The study also examines strategies for reducing construction and operational waste through material efficiency, reuse, recycling, composting, and improved waste-management systems. Such approaches can contribute to resource conservation while supporting more sustainable agricultural operations. The relationship between sustainable design and functional performance is also considered. Agricultural buildings must accommodate activities such as storage, processing, livestock management, machinery movement, and product handling while maintaining appropriate environmental and hygienic conditions. The study examines how sustainable strategies can be integrated without compromising accessibility, safety, flexibility, durability, and operational efficiency. Adaptability is also considered important because agricultural activities, production volumes, technologies, and environmental conditions may change over time. The study aims to assess sustainable design strategies applicable to agricultural buildings and to identify architectural approaches that can improve environmental performance while maintaining functional efficiency. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, agricultural developers, planners, facility managers, and policymakers involved in the design and development of agricultural facilities. The study contributes to the advancement of climate-responsive and resource-efficient agricultural architecture capable of supporting productive, resilient, and environmentally responsible agricultural activities.
