Assessment of Sustainable Building Practices Among Local Contractors
Abstract
The construction industry plays a significant role in environmental sustainability through its consumption of energy, water, raw materials, and other resources. Local contractors are particularly important in the implementation of sustainable building practices because they are directly involved in material selection, construction methods, waste management, and site operations. However, the adoption of sustainable practices may be affected by limited technical knowledge, financial constraints, availability of materials, and established construction habits. This study assesses sustainable building practices among local contractors, with emphasis on their level of adoption, awareness, and implementation within building projects. The study examines sustainable practices applied during different stages of construction. These include efficient material utilization, construction waste reduction, recycling and reuse of materials, energy-efficient construction methods, water conservation, appropriate site management, use of locally available materials, and environmentally responsible procurement. The study considers the extent to which local contractors incorporate these practices into their routine construction activities and the factors that influence their adoption. Particular attention is given to contractors' knowledge and awareness of sustainable construction principles. Awareness of environmental impacts, availability of technical training, access to professional guidance, and understanding of sustainable building standards can influence contractors' willingness and ability to implement environmentally responsible practices. The study therefore examines the relationship between contractors' knowledge, professional experience, and actual application of sustainable methods on construction sites. The study also considers economic and operational factors affecting sustainable construction practices. The cost of sustainable materials, availability of appropriate technologies, client requirements, project budgets, labour skills, and access to reliable suppliers may influence contractors' decisions. In addition, site conditions, project schedules, regulatory requirements, and construction supervision can affect the extent to which sustainable practices are implemented. Understanding these factors is essential for identifying practical approaches that can encourage wider adoption among local contractors. Challenges associated with sustainable construction are further assessed, including inadequate training, limited access to sustainable materials, perceived high initial costs, weak enforcement of environmental regulations, limited client demand, and insufficient monitoring. The study recognizes that improving sustainable construction requires cooperation among contractors, clients, consultants, regulatory authorities, suppliers, and other stakeholders. Strengthening technical capacity and creating supportive institutional and economic conditions may improve the consistent application of sustainable practices. The study aims to assess the adoption of sustainable building practices among local contractors and identify the major factors influencing their implementation. The findings are expected to provide useful information for construction professionals, policymakers, regulatory agencies, clients, and training institutions seeking to promote sustainable construction. The study also seeks to contribute to improved environmental performance, resource efficiency, waste reduction, and responsible construction practices within the local building industry.
