Assessment of Spatial Relationships in Contemporary Residential Buildings

Abstract

Spatial relationships are fundamental to the functional organization, comfort, and usability of contemporary residential buildings. The arrangement and connectivity of spaces such as living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, circulation areas, and outdoor spaces influence how residents move through and interact with their homes. Poorly coordinated spatial relationships can result in unnecessary movement, reduced privacy, functional conflicts, and inefficient use of available floor area. Assessing these relationships is therefore important for achieving residential environments that respond effectively to occupants' functional and social needs. This study assesses spatial relationships in contemporary residential buildings by examining the connections, adjacencies, hierarchy, and degrees of separation between major residential spaces. It considers how spaces are organized according to their functions and how frequently used areas are connected to one another. Particular attention is given to the relationships between public, semi-private, private, and service spaces, as well as the positioning of circulation routes. These factors are evaluated to determine their contribution to functional efficiency and residential usability. The research further examines how spatial relationships influence movement and accessibility within residential buildings. Direct connections between frequently used spaces can reduce unnecessary travel distances and improve convenience, while appropriate separation between incompatible functions can minimize disturbances and conflicts. The relationship between entrances, living areas, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, staircases, and outdoor spaces is therefore considered. The study also evaluates how spatial organization supports intuitive movement and effective use of the dwelling. Privacy and social interaction are additional considerations in assessing residential spatial relationships. Contemporary households require a balance between spaces that encourage interaction and areas that provide privacy and retreat. The positioning of bedrooms, living spaces, visitor areas, family spaces, and service zones can influence visual, acoustic, and physical privacy. The study examines how these relationships respond to different patterns of household interaction while maintaining appropriate separation between public and private activities. Challenges affecting spatial relationships may include limited floor areas, irregular building plots, changing household structures, competing functional requirements, and inadequate consideration of future adaptability. Poor spatial coordination can lead to congested circulation, overlapping activities, inadequate privacy, and underutilized spaces. Evaluating these challenges can provide opportunities for improving residential layouts and developing spatial arrangements that are more responsive to contemporary lifestyles and household needs. The study aims to establish the quality and effectiveness of spatial relationships in contemporary residential buildings and identify design characteristics that support functional efficiency, privacy, accessibility, and social interaction. Its findings are expected to assist architects and residential designers in developing more coherent and user-centred spatial arrangements. The study contributes to contemporary residential architecture by emphasizing the importance of carefully coordinated relationships between spaces as a basis for improving building functionality, occupant satisfaction, and overall residential quality.
