Assessment of Public Open Spaces in Residential Neighbourhoods

Abstract

Public open spaces are important components of residential neighbourhoods because they provide opportunities for recreation, social interaction, relaxation, physical activity, and community engagement. Well-designed open spaces can contribute to the environmental quality, social cohesion, and overall livability of neighbourhoods. However, inadequate provision, poor design, insufficient maintenance, and inappropriate location can reduce their usefulness and discourage community use. Assessing public open spaces in residential neighbourhoods is therefore important for understanding their quality, accessibility, functionality, and contribution to neighbourhood life. This study assesses public open spaces in residential neighbourhoods, focusing on their availability, distribution, accessibility, physical characteristics, functionality, and level of use. It examines spaces such as neighbourhood parks, playgrounds, green areas, communal spaces, pedestrian areas, and recreational grounds. The assessment considers factors including size, location, accessibility, seating, vegetation, lighting, pathways, recreational facilities, cleanliness, safety, and maintenance conditions. Effective public open spaces should be conveniently located and easily accessible to different groups of residents. Adequate pathways, seating areas, shade, landscaping, recreational facilities, and activity zones can encourage regular use and accommodate diverse social and recreational needs. The study therefore examines how spatial organization and physical design influence the attractiveness, usability, and inclusiveness of neighbourhood open spaces. The environmental qualities of public open spaces are also important to their performance within residential neighbourhoods. Trees, vegetation, shaded areas, permeable surfaces, and appropriate landscape elements can contribute to thermal comfort, stormwater management, biodiversity, and visual quality. The study considers how landscape design and environmental features can improve the comfort and functionality of open spaces while supporting healthier neighbourhood environments. Despite their importance, residential neighbourhoods may experience challenges such as inadequate open-space provision, encroachment, poor maintenance, limited recreational facilities, security concerns, poor accessibility, and competing land-use demands. These conditions can reduce community participation and lead to the underutilization or deterioration of available spaces. Improving public open spaces requires appropriate planning, community participation, regular maintenance, adequate facilities, effective management, and protection from inappropriate development. The study concludes that well-planned and properly maintained public open spaces can contribute significantly to the social, environmental, and recreational quality of residential neighbourhoods. Providing accessible, safe, functional, and environmentally responsive open spaces can encourage community interaction, physical activity, relaxation, and improved neighbourhood livability. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, urban planners, landscape designers, developers, local authorities, and community stakeholders in improving public open-space provision and management within residential neighbourhoods.
