Assessment of Personal Space Requirements in Contemporary Offices

Abstract

Personal space is an important consideration in contemporary office design because the spatial conditions surrounding employees can influence comfort, privacy, concentration, interaction, and overall workplace experience. As office environments increasingly incorporate open-plan layouts, shared workstations, collaborative areas, and flexible workspaces, determining appropriate personal space requirements has become more complex. Inadequate personal space may contribute to crowding and distraction, while excessive allocation may reduce spatial efficiency and increase operational costs. This study assesses personal space requirements in contemporary offices, focusing on the relationship between workspace dimensions, occupancy patterns, and employee experience. It considers factors such as workstation size, desk spacing, circulation clearances, seating arrangements, privacy levels, and the distance between individual and shared work areas. The study seeks to identify spatial conditions that can support employee comfort while maintaining efficient use of available office space. The research also examines how different office configurations influence personal space requirements. Open-plan offices, cellular offices, shared workstations, hot-desking environments, and activity-based workplaces provide varying degrees of personal territory and privacy. The study considers how these configurations affect employees' ability to concentrate, communicate, collaborate, and perform individual tasks without experiencing excessive physical or visual intrusion. Privacy and interpersonal interaction are further considered as important dimensions of personal space. Appropriate separation between workstations can reduce unwanted interruptions and visual distractions, while well-planned collaborative areas can provide opportunities for interaction without disrupting individual workspaces. The use of screens, furniture arrangements, acoustic treatments, spatial zoning, and transitional areas may help establish appropriate degrees of separation within contemporary offices. The study also considers the influence of personal space on accessibility, flexibility, and workplace adaptability. Office environments must accommodate employees with different physical needs, work patterns, and preferences while allowing spaces to be reconfigured as organizational requirements change. Adequate circulation, accessible workstations, flexible furniture, and appropriately distributed shared facilities can support inclusive and adaptable workplace environments. The study aims to provide a clearer understanding of personal space requirements in contemporary office environments and their relationship with workplace functionality and user experience. Its findings are expected to assist architects, interior designers, facility managers, and organizations in developing office layouts that balance spatial efficiency with employee comfort, privacy, accessibility, and interaction. Effective personal space planning can contribute to more functional, inclusive, and adaptable contemporary workplaces.
