Assessment of Open-Plan Offices and Employee Satisfaction

Abstract

Open-plan offices have become widely used in contemporary workplaces because they can support communication, collaboration, flexibility, and efficient use of available floor space. By reducing permanent physical divisions between employees, open-plan arrangements can create more visually connected and interactive work environments. However, the absence of enclosed spaces may also expose employees to noise, visual distractions, interruptions, and reduced privacy. Assessing the relationship between open-plan office design and employee satisfaction is therefore important for understanding how workplace configuration influences employee experience. This study assesses open-plan offices and employee satisfaction, focusing on employees’ perceptions of the physical, functional, and environmental qualities of open workplace environments. It considers factors such as workstation arrangement, personal space, circulation, accessibility, privacy, communication, and access to shared facilities. The study also examines how employees perceive the overall suitability of open-plan offices for individual and collaborative work activities. Acoustic conditions are a major consideration in open-plan office environments. Conversations, telephone calls, equipment, movement, and other workplace activities can create continuous or intermittent noise that may interfere with concentration and task performance. The study therefore considers sound absorption, workstation spacing, acoustic partitions, background noise, and the location of noisy activities as factors that can influence employee satisfaction. Effective acoustic planning may help reduce unwanted disturbances while maintaining opportunities for communication. Visual privacy and personal space are also important aspects of open-plan office design. Although visual connectivity can encourage interaction and improve awareness among employees, excessive exposure may create feelings of distraction or lack of privacy. The arrangement of desks, screens, partitions, furniture, and circulation routes can influence the degree of visual separation available to employees. Providing a combination of open areas, semi-private zones, and enclosed spaces may help accommodate different work requirements and preferences. The study further considers environmental and ergonomic factors that contribute to employee satisfaction. Natural lighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, indoor air quality, workstation ergonomics, furniture quality, and access to communal facilities can influence how employees experience open-plan workplaces. Employee satisfaction may also vary according to job responsibilities, work patterns, organizational culture, and individual preferences. Understanding these differences can support more responsive approaches to open-plan office planning. The study aims to assess open-plan offices and identify the design characteristics that influence employee satisfaction. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, interior designers, facility managers, and organizations seeking to improve existing or proposed open-plan workplaces. By balancing collaboration and spatial efficiency with privacy, acoustic comfort, environmental quality, and employee needs, open-plan offices can be designed to provide more supportive and satisfactory working environments.
