Assessment of Nature-Based Solutions for Sustainable Urban Development
Abstract
Rapid urbanization has created increasing pressure on urban infrastructure, natural ecosystems, and environmental resources. Challenges such as flooding, urban heat, air pollution, biodiversity loss, inadequate green spaces, and declining environmental quality have created a need for development approaches that integrate ecological processes into urban planning. Nature-based solutions provide an opportunity to address these challenges by using natural systems and processes to deliver environmental, social, and economic benefits. Assessing these approaches is therefore important for developing urban areas that are more resilient, sustainable, and responsive to changing environmental conditions. This study assesses nature-based solutions for sustainable urban development, focusing on their application in addressing major environmental and spatial challenges within urban areas. The research examines strategies including urban forests, green roofs, green walls, urban wetlands, rain gardens, permeable surfaces, bioswales, street trees, parks, and other forms of green infrastructure. It considers how these interventions can be integrated into existing and emerging urban development patterns to improve environmental performance while supporting the functional needs of urban communities. The study investigates the contribution of nature-based solutions to urban climate regulation and stormwater management. Vegetation and green infrastructure can provide shade, reduce surface temperatures, improve evapotranspiration, and contribute to the mitigation of urban heat. Similarly, wetlands, rain gardens, bioswales, and permeable surfaces can increase water infiltration and reduce surface runoff during heavy rainfall. The effectiveness of these strategies depends on their scale, location, design, maintenance, local climate, soil conditions, and relationship with existing drainage and infrastructure systems. Beyond environmental performance, the research considers the social and economic dimensions of nature-based urban development. Accessible parks, green corridors, landscaped public spaces, and community gardens can provide opportunities for recreation, social interaction, and improved quality of life. Vegetation can also contribute to improved air quality, biodiversity conservation, and visual amenity. However, challenges such as land availability, maintenance costs, unequal access to green spaces, limited technical capacity, and competing development priorities may affect successful implementation. The findings are expected to provide useful information for architects, urban planners, landscape professionals, policymakers, and development authorities seeking practical approaches to sustainable urban development. The study may identify suitable nature-based strategies for different urban contexts and highlight the conditions required for their effective implementation. Particular attention is given to the need for integrated planning that connects ecological systems with buildings, transportation networks, drainage infrastructure, public spaces, and community needs. Ultimately, the study aims to establish a clearer understanding of how nature-based solutions can contribute to sustainable and resilient urban development. By integrating ecological processes into urban planning and design, these strategies can help address environmental challenges while enhancing urban liveability and community wellbeing. The findings can support evidence-based planning decisions and encourage a shift toward urban development approaches that recognize natural systems as important components of infrastructure and long-term environmental resilience.
