Assessment of Natural Ventilation in Residential Buildings
Abstract
Natural ventilation is an important component of residential building design because it contributes to indoor thermal comfort, air quality, moisture control, and reduced dependence on mechanical cooling systems. In warm climates, appropriately designed ventilation can improve indoor conditions by promoting air movement and removing accumulated heat and pollutants. However, poor building orientation, inadequate openings, inappropriate room layouts, and obstructions can limit natural airflow. Assessing natural ventilation in residential buildings is therefore important for improving environmental performance and occupant comfort. This study assesses the effectiveness of natural ventilation strategies in selected residential buildings, focusing on the relationship between architectural design characteristics and indoor airflow conditions. The study examines building orientation, window placement, opening sizes, room configuration, internal partitions, ventilation paths, and the relationship between opposite or adjacent openings. It also considers the influence of building form and spatial organization on air movement. The assessment seeks to determine how effectively existing residential buildings utilize natural ventilation opportunities. Particular attention is given to the design and positioning of windows, doors, vents, courtyards, and other openings that facilitate air exchange. Cross-ventilation and single-sided ventilation strategies are examined in relation to room depth, opening configuration, prevailing wind direction, and internal obstructions. The study also considers the influence of shading devices, vegetation, neighbouring buildings, and boundary conditions on airflow. Appropriate placement and sizing of ventilation openings can improve air movement while reducing excessive solar heat gain. The study further evaluates the relationship between natural ventilation and indoor environmental comfort. Factors such as indoor temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, perceived thermal comfort, and indoor air quality are considered. Occupant behaviour, including window-opening practices and preferences for natural or mechanical ventilation, is also examined. These factors are important because the effectiveness of natural ventilation depends not only on architectural provisions but also on how occupants interact with the building environment. Challenges affecting natural ventilation in residential buildings may include poor orientation, inadequate window openings, excessive room depth, poorly positioned partitions, surrounding obstructions, security concerns, noise, dust, and unfavourable external climatic conditions. These challenges can reduce ventilation effectiveness and increase dependence on air-conditioning systems. Addressing them requires climate-responsive design approaches that integrate building orientation, opening design, shading, spatial planning, security, and occupant requirements. The study concludes that effective natural ventilation is strongly influenced by residential building orientation, opening configuration, spatial organization, external conditions, and occupant behaviour. It recommends appropriate building orientation, strategically positioned and adequately sized openings, effective cross-ventilation, climate-responsive shading, suitable room configurations, and unobstructed airflow paths. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, building designers, developers, and homeowners in creating residential buildings that provide healthier, more comfortable, and energy-efficient indoor environments.
