Assessment of Material Waste Management on Construction Sites
Abstract
Material waste generated during construction activities represents a significant environmental and economic challenge within the building industry. Excessive waste can increase project costs, consume valuable natural resources, create disposal problems, and contribute to environmental degradation. Construction sites often generate waste as a result of poor material estimation, improper storage, damage during handling, over-ordering, and ineffective construction practices. This study assesses material waste management practices on construction sites, with emphasis on the causes, handling methods, and strategies for reducing construction material waste. The study examines the major types of material waste generated during building construction, including concrete, timber, blocks, bricks, metals, plastering materials, tiles, packaging materials, and other construction products. It evaluates the quantity and sources of waste associated with different construction activities and building components. Attention is also given to the processes used for material storage, handling, reuse, recycling, and disposal. Understanding the sources and patterns of material waste provides a basis for improving resource management throughout the construction process. Several factors contribute to material waste on construction sites, including inaccurate quantity estimation, poor workmanship, inadequate storage facilities, material damage, design changes, and inefficient cutting or installation practices. The study assesses the influence of project management practices, labour skills, site organization, procurement procedures, and supervision on the generation of waste. It also considers the extent to which contractors and site workers apply waste reduction principles during construction activities. Effective material waste management requires appropriate planning and coordination throughout the project lifecycle. The study therefore examines practices such as accurate material forecasting, just-in-time procurement, proper storage, material segregation, reuse of off-cuts, recycling, and controlled disposal. The role of site managers, contractors, suppliers, and workers in implementing these measures is also considered. Improved communication and monitoring can help minimize unnecessary material consumption and prevent avoidable losses. The economic and environmental implications of construction material waste are also considered. Excessive waste increases material procurement and transportation costs while placing additional pressure on disposal facilities. Conversely, effective waste management can reduce project expenditure, improve resource efficiency, and minimize the environmental impacts associated with material extraction, production, transportation, and disposal. The adoption of waste reduction strategies can therefore contribute to more sustainable and cost-effective construction practices. The study concludes that effective material waste management is essential for improving construction efficiency, reducing project costs, and minimizing environmental impacts. Proper planning, accurate material estimation, improved storage, skilled workmanship, material reuse, recycling, and effective site supervision can significantly reduce unnecessary waste generation. The study recommends stronger waste management policies, improved contractor awareness, regular site monitoring, worker training, and the integration of waste reduction strategies into construction planning and project management practices.
