Assessment of Locally Sourced Materials in Sustainable Building Construction
Abstract
The construction industry plays a significant role in resource consumption, energy use, waste generation, and environmental degradation. The increasing dependence on imported and energy-intensive building materials can further increase construction costs and environmental impacts, particularly in developing countries. Locally sourced materials provide an opportunity to reduce transportation requirements, support local economies, and promote more sustainable construction practices. This study assesses the use of locally sourced materials in sustainable building construction, with emphasis on their environmental, economic, and technical performance. The study examines commonly available local materials and their potential applications in building construction. Materials used for walls, roofs, floors, finishes, insulation, and other building components are considered based on their availability, physical properties, durability, cost, and ease of application. The research evaluates the extent to which these materials can meet contemporary construction requirements while reducing dependence on externally sourced products. Attention is also given to local knowledge and traditional construction techniques associated with the use of indigenous materials. Environmental performance is a major focus of the assessment. The study considers factors such as embodied energy, transportation distance, resource consumption, waste generation, recyclability, and potential environmental emissions. Locally sourced materials may reduce transportation-related impacts and encourage the use of renewable or naturally occurring resources. Their thermal properties are also examined because materials with appropriate characteristics can contribute to improved indoor comfort and reduced energy demand during building operation. The research further considers the economic implications of using locally sourced materials. Their availability within local communities may reduce transportation and procurement costs while creating opportunities for local employment, material processing, and small-scale manufacturing. However, the overall economic performance depends on factors such as material quality, processing requirements, availability throughout the year, skilled labour, storage, and maintenance. The study therefore considers both initial construction costs and longer-term performance. Despite their potential benefits, locally sourced materials may face challenges related to standardization, durability, quality control, technical knowledge, building regulations, and market acceptance. Variations in material properties and inconsistent production practices can affect construction performance and user confidence. The study therefore examines the importance of appropriate testing, certification, improved production techniques, professional training, and integration of local materials with contemporary construction technologies. The study aims to assess the suitability and sustainability of locally sourced materials for building construction and identify conditions that can support their wider adoption. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, builders, developers, material producers, and policymakers interested in environmentally responsible construction. Promoting appropriate local materials can contribute to reduced environmental impacts, improved resource efficiency, lower construction costs, local economic development, and more context-responsive sustainable buildings.
