Assessment of Horizontal Circulation in Large Institutional Buildings

Abstract

Horizontal circulation is a critical component of large institutional buildings because it determines how users move between rooms, departments, activity areas, and support facilities on the same floor. As institutional buildings often accommodate large numbers of users with different movement patterns, poorly designed horizontal circulation can result in congestion, long travel distances, confusion, and accessibility challenges. Effective circulation planning should provide clear, direct, and convenient connections between related spaces. This study assesses horizontal circulation in large institutional buildings and examines its influence on movement efficiency, accessibility, safety, and user experience. The study focuses on major horizontal circulation elements, including corridors, lobbies, passageways, internal streets, connecting spaces, and transitional areas. Their width, length, configuration, visibility, connectivity, and relationship with functional spaces are assessed. Attention is also given to the location of entrances, activity areas, staircases, lifts, and service spaces in relation to horizontal movement routes. These factors are examined to determine how effectively circulation systems support the functional organization of institutional buildings. Circulation efficiency is influenced by the directness and connectivity of movement routes. Long corridors, excessive changes in direction, dead-end passages, and poorly positioned intersections may increase travel distances and make navigation difficult. Conversely, well-organized circulation networks can provide clear connections between frequently used spaces and reduce unnecessary movement. The study therefore evaluates route patterns, travel distances, intersection points, and potential congestion areas within institutional environments. Accessibility and inclusivity are important considerations in horizontal circulation planning. Corridors and passageways should accommodate different categories of users, including persons using wheelchairs, elderly users, and individuals with temporary mobility limitations. Adequate widths, appropriate surface conditions, handrails, accessible doors, resting areas, and clear routes can improve independent movement. The study examines how horizontal circulation systems respond to universal accessibility requirements and support equitable access throughout institutional buildings. Safety, wayfinding, and emergency movement are also considered in the assessment. Large institutional buildings may contain users who are unfamiliar with the building, making clear visual connections, signage, landmarks, and logical circulation sequences particularly important. Circulation routes must also support safe evacuation and avoid conflicts between everyday movement and service activities. The study therefore considers the relationship between circulation design, spatial orientation, crowd management, and emergency preparedness. The study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors affecting horizontal circulation in large institutional buildings. It is expected to identify common circulation deficiencies and establish design considerations for improving movement efficiency, accessibility, wayfinding, safety, and user comfort. The findings will be useful to architects, planners, and facility managers in developing institutional buildings with clear, inclusive, and efficient horizontal circulation systems that support both everyday activities and emergency movement requirements.
