Assessment of Energy Management Practices in Commercial Buildings
Abstract
Energy management is an important aspect of commercial building operation because it influences energy consumption, operating costs, environmental performance, and occupant comfort. Commercial buildings often accommodate lighting, cooling, ventilation, office equipment, elevators, refrigeration, and other energy-intensive systems that operate for extended periods. Effective energy management practices can help identify sources of excessive energy use and improve the efficiency of building systems without compromising their functional requirements. This study assesses energy management practices in commercial buildings by examining the strategies, procedures, and operational measures used to monitor and control energy consumption. It considers practices such as energy auditing, energy monitoring, equipment scheduling, preventive maintenance, lighting management, HVAC optimization, and occupant awareness programmes. Attention is given to how these practices are integrated into routine building management and their contribution to improved energy performance. The study further examines the role of building systems and technologies in energy management. Efficient lighting systems, programmable controls, occupancy sensors, smart meters, building management systems, and energy-efficient cooling equipment can provide opportunities for reducing unnecessary consumption. The effectiveness of these technologies depends on appropriate installation, operation, maintenance, monitoring, and user engagement. In addition to technological strategies, the study considers the influence of management practices and occupant behaviour on energy performance. Building users' habits regarding lighting, air-conditioning, equipment use, and operating schedules can significantly affect energy demand. Staff awareness, energy-use policies, management commitment, and clear responsibilities for energy monitoring can therefore support more consistent energy-saving practices within commercial buildings. The effectiveness of energy management practices may be influenced by building age, occupancy patterns, operating hours, climate, equipment condition, management structures, financial resources, and availability of technical expertise. Some commercial buildings may have energy-saving technologies but limited monitoring or maintenance systems, while others may rely primarily on behavioural measures. Addressing these differences requires building-specific energy management strategies based on actual consumption patterns and operational conditions. The study concludes that effective energy management in commercial buildings requires an integrated approach combining monitoring, efficient technologies, maintenance, operational controls, management policies, and occupant participation. Systematic energy audits and continuous performance monitoring can help identify inefficiencies and support informed decision-making. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for building owners, facility managers, architects, and energy professionals in developing practical energy management practices that improve efficiency, reduce operating costs, and support sustainable commercial building performance.
