Assessment of Construction Waste Management Practices
Abstract
Construction activities generate substantial quantities of waste from material off-cuts, packaging, demolition components, surplus materials, damaged products, and construction processes. Poor management of construction waste can contribute to environmental pollution, inefficient use of resources, increased project costs, and unnecessary pressure on landfill facilities. Effective construction waste management is therefore important for promoting resource efficiency, environmental protection, and sustainable construction practices. Assessing existing waste management practices can help identify weaknesses and opportunities for improving waste reduction and recovery on building sites. This study assesses construction waste management practices, focusing on the methods adopted for the prevention, handling, storage, separation, reuse, recycling, transportation, and disposal of construction waste. It examines the types and sources of waste generated during building projects and considers the extent to which construction professionals implement waste management strategies. The study also investigates how waste management practices influence material efficiency, project costs, site cleanliness, environmental performance, and overall construction project sustainability. Waste reduction at the source is an important component of effective construction waste management. Accurate quantity estimation, proper material storage, careful handling, appropriate procurement, and efficient construction methods can reduce material losses before waste is generated. Reuse and recycling can further improve resource efficiency by allowing materials such as timber, metals, concrete, masonry, plastics, and packaging to be recovered for subsequent applications. The study therefore examines the extent to which waste hierarchy principles are incorporated into construction activities. Effective waste management also depends on proper site organization and coordination among project participants. Clearly designated storage and collection areas, waste segregation systems, appropriate signage, and regular removal of waste can improve site safety and efficiency. Contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, consultants, and workers all have roles to play in minimizing waste generation and ensuring appropriate handling. The study therefore considers the influence of communication, worker awareness, supervision, and management commitment on the implementation of construction waste management practices. Despite the environmental and economic benefits of effective waste management, construction projects may face challenges such as inadequate waste separation facilities, limited recycling infrastructure, insufficient worker awareness, poor site planning, weak enforcement of regulations, and lack of incentives for material recovery. These challenges can encourage indiscriminate disposal and reduce opportunities for reuse and recycling. Improving waste management requires greater awareness, appropriate site facilities, clear waste management plans, effective supervision, and stronger collaboration among construction stakeholders. The study concludes that effective construction waste management practices are essential for reducing material losses, controlling project costs, improving site conditions, and minimizing environmental impacts. Integrating waste reduction, reuse, recycling, segregation, and responsible disposal into construction planning can contribute to more resource-efficient and sustainable building projects. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for contractors, architects, engineers, project managers, policymakers, and other construction professionals seeking to strengthen construction waste management and promote sustainable construction practices.
