Assessment of Communication Problems Among Construction Professionals
Abstract
Effective communication is essential to the successful delivery of building projects because construction activities involve continuous interaction among architects, engineers, contractors, clients, quantity surveyors, suppliers, consultants, and other professionals. These stakeholders depend on accurate and timely information to coordinate design decisions, procurement, construction activities, and quality control. Communication problems can therefore result in misunderstandings, information gaps, delays, errors, conflicts, rework, and increased project costs. This study assesses communication problems among construction professionals, focusing on the factors that hinder effective exchange of project information. It examines issues such as unclear instructions, delayed responses, incomplete information, poor documentation, inconsistent communication channels, language difficulties, and inadequate coordination between project participants. The study seeks to identify common communication challenges and examine their effects on construction project performance. The research also considers communication problems associated with architectural and technical documentation. Inaccurate drawings, conflicting specifications, outdated information, and poorly coordinated revisions can create uncertainty among construction professionals. The absence of effective document-control procedures may further result in project participants relying on different versions of drawings or instructions, increasing the likelihood of construction errors and rework. Interpersonal and organizational factors are also examined as contributors to communication difficulties. Differences in professional responsibilities, hierarchical relationships, limited consultation, poor teamwork, and inadequate feedback mechanisms may restrict the flow of information between stakeholders. Communication problems can become more pronounced when project teams are large, responsibilities are poorly defined, or professionals operate without clearly established procedures for reporting, coordination, and decision-making. The study further considers the influence of communication technologies and project management practices on professional interaction. Digital communication platforms, collaborative software, electronic document management, site meetings, progress reports, and structured information-sharing systems can improve the speed and accessibility of project information when appropriately implemented. However, inconsistent use of communication tools, limited technical skills, and inadequate information management practices may reduce their effectiveness. The study aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of communication problems among construction professionals and their implications for project delivery. Its findings are expected to assist architects, engineers, contractors, project managers, clients, and consultants in developing more effective communication procedures. Improving information sharing, documentation, coordination, feedback, and collaborative decision-making can contribute to reduced misunderstandings, fewer construction errors, improved teamwork, and more efficient project performance.
