Assessment of Climate-Responsive Design Features in Contemporary Buildings
Abstract
Climate-responsive design is increasingly important in contemporary architecture because buildings must respond effectively to changing environmental conditions while maintaining occupant comfort and reducing energy demand. Building form, orientation, openings, shading devices, materials, vegetation, ventilation strategies, and roof design can influence how buildings interact with solar radiation, temperature, wind, rainfall, and humidity. In warm and humid regions, inappropriate design responses may result in excessive heat gain, poor ventilation, discomfort, and increased dependence on mechanical cooling. Assessing climate-responsive features is therefore important for improving the environmental performance of contemporary buildings. This study assesses climate-responsive design features incorporated into contemporary buildings, with emphasis on architectural strategies that respond to local climatic conditions. The assessment considers building orientation, compactness, window configuration, shading devices, roof forms, building envelope materials, courtyards, verandas, balconies, landscaping, natural ventilation openings, and thermal insulation. Attention is given to the extent to which these features are integrated into building design and their relationship with indoor environmental conditions. The study further examines the influence of climate-responsive features on thermal comfort and natural ventilation. Building orientation and façade design can affect solar exposure, while appropriate window placement and shading can regulate heat gain and daylight penetration. Cross-ventilation, stack ventilation, courtyards, and strategically positioned openings can enhance air movement and reduce reliance on mechanical systems. The study considers how these strategies interact with building form, internal space organization, material properties, and occupancy patterns to influence indoor comfort. In addition, the assessment considers the role of landscape and outdoor design in moderating the microclimate around buildings. Trees, vegetation, shaded outdoor areas, water-sensitive features, and appropriate site planning can reduce surface temperatures and provide protection from direct solar exposure. Roof overhangs, covered walkways, verandas, and transitional spaces can similarly provide shade and improve the relationship between indoor and outdoor environments. These features are examined as complementary components of climate-responsive architectural design. The study recognizes that the effectiveness of climate-responsive strategies depends on factors such as local climate, building orientation, site conditions, construction materials, occupancy patterns, maintenance, and the quality of architectural implementation. Poorly designed or improperly maintained shading devices, blocked ventilation openings, inappropriate glazing, and unsuitable material choices can reduce the effectiveness of otherwise appropriate strategies. Contemporary buildings must therefore integrate climate-responsive measures from the early design stages rather than treating them as isolated additions. The study aims to evaluate the application and effectiveness of climate-responsive design features in contemporary buildings and identify strategies that can support improved environmental performance. Its findings are expected to assist architects, engineers, developers, facility managers, and policymakers in incorporating appropriate climatic considerations into building design and planning. The study ultimately contributes to the development of more comfortable, energy-efficient, environmentally responsive, and resilient contemporary buildings.
