Assessment of Building Orientation on Residential Building Performance
Abstract
Building orientation is an important design consideration that influences the environmental, functional, and energy performance of residential buildings. The positioning of a building relative to the sun, prevailing winds, surrounding structures, and site conditions affects solar exposure, natural ventilation, daylight availability, and indoor thermal conditions. Appropriate orientation can support passive environmental control and reduce dependence on mechanical systems, while poorly considered orientation may increase heat gain, glare, energy consumption, and occupant discomfort. This study assesses the influence of building orientation on residential building performance, focusing on how different orientations affect environmental conditions and household energy requirements. It examines the relationship between building orientation, solar radiation, prevailing wind direction, window placement, building envelope configuration, and internal spatial arrangement. Attention is given to how the orientation of residential buildings can influence the performance of bedrooms, living spaces, kitchens, and other frequently occupied areas. The study further evaluates the relationship between orientation and thermal performance. Different orientations can expose building surfaces and openings to varying levels of direct solar radiation throughout the day, influencing indoor temperatures and cooling requirements. The study considers how orientation interacts with shading devices, roof configuration, wall materials, glazing, window-to-wall ratio, and building form to influence heat gain and thermal comfort. Natural ventilation opportunities associated with prevailing wind directions are also examined. Daylighting and visual comfort are considered alongside thermal and energy performance. Building orientation can determine the amount and distribution of natural light entering residential spaces, while excessive exposure may result in glare and overheating. The study therefore examines how orientation influences daylight availability, solar penetration, ventilation, and indoor environmental quality. Site-specific factors such as surrounding buildings, vegetation, topography, and neighbouring development are also considered as modifiers of orientation performance. Challenges may arise when the preferred orientation for one environmental objective conflicts with another. For example, an orientation that improves exposure to prevailing winds may increase solar exposure on particular building facades, while an orientation selected for daylighting may require additional shading measures to control heat gain. Residential function, plot constraints, road access, views, privacy, and planning regulations may further limit the range of possible orientations. These factors highlight the need for integrated orientation decisions rather than relying on a single environmental criterion. The study aims to provide a clearer understanding of the role of building orientation in improving residential building performance. It is expected to identify orientation strategies that can support thermal comfort, natural ventilation, daylighting, energy efficiency, and overall indoor environmental quality. The findings can assist architects and residential designers in making informed site-planning and building-form decisions that respond effectively to climatic conditions while maintaining functional, aesthetic, and contextual requirements.
