Architectural Strategies for Improving Dignity and Privacy in Elderly Care Facilities
Abstract
Dignity and privacy are fundamental considerations in the design of elderly care facilities because older adults may experience increased dependence on caregivers and reduced control over their personal environment. Architectural conditions such as room configuration, circulation patterns, visibility, noise levels, and access to private spaces can significantly influence residents' sense of independence, comfort, and personal identity. Inadequate consideration of these factors may result in environments that feel institutional, restrictive, or intrusive. Developing appropriate architectural strategies is therefore essential for creating elderly care facilities that support both physical needs and emotional wellbeing. This study examines architectural strategies for improving dignity and privacy in elderly care facilities, with particular attention to spatial planning, room organization, circulation, communal areas, and personal spaces. It considers how the arrangement of bedrooms, bathrooms, dining areas, lounges, activity spaces, and healthcare facilities can provide residents with appropriate degrees of privacy and social interaction. The study also explores the relationship between spatial organization and residents' ability to exercise personal choice, maintain routines, and control their interaction with caregivers and other residents. Architectural design elements can play an important role in establishing appropriate levels of privacy. Individual or semi-private bedrooms, appropriately positioned entrances, visual screening, acoustic separation, adjustable partitions, and private sanitary facilities can help residents maintain personal boundaries. Carefully designed circulation systems can reduce unnecessary exposure to public movement, while transitional spaces can provide gradual movement between private and communal areas. These strategies can create environments where residents have greater control over when they interact with others and when they can retreat to personal spaces. The study also considers how communal spaces can be designed without compromising residents' dignity. Shared lounges, dining spaces, gardens, activity areas, and social spaces should provide opportunities for interaction while allowing residents to choose their preferred level of participation. Appropriate furniture arrangement, spatial zoning, visual connections, natural lighting, landscaping, and access to quiet areas can support both social engagement and personal retreat. The integration of familiar residential features and human-scaled spaces may further reduce institutional characteristics and contribute to a stronger sense of belonging. Several challenges may affect the implementation of dignity- and privacy-oriented design strategies in elderly care facilities. Limited floor area, construction costs, staffing requirements, safety regulations, accessibility standards, and the need for medical supervision may create conflicts between privacy and operational efficiency. Excessive surveillance can also reduce residents' sense of independence, while insufficient visibility may create safety concerns. Addressing these issues requires a balanced approach in which safety, accessibility, caregiving requirements, privacy, and individual autonomy are considered together during the design process. The study aims to identify architectural strategies that can enhance dignity, privacy, autonomy, and wellbeing among elderly residents. The findings are expected to assist architects, healthcare planners, facility managers, and policymakers in developing elderly care environments that are supportive, respectful, and responsive to residents' individual needs. By integrating appropriate spatial organization, privacy gradients, environmental comfort, accessibility, and opportunities for personal choice, elderly care facilities can move beyond purely functional models toward more humane and resident-centred environments.
