Effect of Social Media on Farmers’ Access to Agricultural Extension Information

Abstract

Social media has become an important communication channel for sharing agricultural information and connecting farmers with extension professionals, agricultural organisations, researchers, input providers, and other farming stakeholders. Platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, and other digital networks provide opportunities for farmers to receive information on improved farming practices, agricultural technologies, market opportunities, weather conditions, and farm management. The use of social media may therefore improve the speed, accessibility, and convenience of agricultural extension information delivery. This study will examine the effect of social media on farmers’ access to agricultural extension information. It will assess how farmers use social media platforms to obtain extension information and determine the extent to which social media contributes to their access to agricultural knowledge and advisory services. The study will also examine the frequency of social media use and the types of agricultural extension information accessed by farmers through these platforms. The study will focus on farmers’ use of social media platforms, frequency of access, preferred platforms, types of agricultural information received, interaction with extension agents, and access to agricultural advisory messages through digital networks. It will also examine farmers’ access to information on crop production, livestock management, pest and disease control, input use, weather conditions, agricultural marketing, post-harvest management, and improved agricultural technologies. Challenges associated with using social media for accessing extension information, including poor internet connectivity, high data costs, limited digital skills, unreliable information, and inadequate access to smartphones, will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on social media use and access to agricultural extension information. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Correlation and regression analysis will also be used to examine the relationship between social media use and farmers’ access to agricultural extension information. The study is expected to reveal that social media provides farmers with increased opportunities to access agricultural extension information in a timely and convenient manner. Farmers who frequently use social media platforms may have greater access to agricultural advisory messages, production information, market information, and interactions with extension professionals. However, inadequate internet connectivity, high communication costs, limited digital literacy, misinformation, and difficulties in identifying reliable agricultural information may limit the effective use of social media for extension purposes. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, agricultural researchers, and digital agriculture service providers. The findings may provide useful information for improving the use of social media as an agricultural extension communication channel. It may also assist extension organisations in developing relevant digital content, strengthening online interaction with farmers, and expanding the reach of agricultural information to farmers in rural and underserved communities. The study concludes that social media can serve as an important channel for improving farmers’ access to agricultural extension information by facilitating rapid information sharing and communication between farmers and extension stakeholders. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies should strengthen their use of social media platforms for delivering accurate, timely, and relevant agricultural information. Farmers should also be encouraged and trained to identify reliable agricultural information, while efforts should be made to improve digital access, internet connectivity, and the availability of farmer-friendly extension content.
