Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Use of Weather Information

Abstract

Weather information is important for agricultural production because farmers depend on weather conditions when planning and carrying out major farm activities. Information on rainfall, temperature, drought, flooding, wind conditions, and weather forecasts can help farmers make appropriate decisions concerning land preparation, planting, crop management, harvesting, and the protection of farm resources. However, farmers may not always have adequate knowledge of how to access, understand, and apply available weather information. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge on the interpretation and use of weather information for agricultural planning. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ use of weather information. The study will assess the extent to which extension training improves farmers’ knowledge and use of available weather information in agricultural activities. It will also examine the relationship between farmers’ exposure to extension training and their ability to access, understand, and apply weather information in making farm management decisions. The study will focus on extension training sessions, practical demonstrations, farmer meetings, field-based instruction, and advisory guidance on weather information. Farmers’ use of weather information will be assessed in relation to rainfall forecasts, temperature information, drought warnings, flooding information, seasonal forecasts, planting dates, fertilizer application, pest and disease management, irrigation, and harvesting decisions. The study will also consider the major channels through which farmers receive weather information, including extension agents, radio, mobile phones, television, farmer organisations, and digital platforms. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment items designed to measure their exposure to extension training and their use of weather information. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ use of weather information. The study is expected to reveal that extension training has a positive effect on farmers’ use of weather information. Farmers who receive regular and practical training may demonstrate improved ability to understand weather forecasts and apply the information when making decisions about planting, crop management, water use, pest and disease control, and harvesting. The study may also identify challenges such as limited access to reliable weather information, poor understanding of technical forecasts, inadequate communication channels, and delays in receiving weather information. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, meteorological agencies, government agricultural institutions, climate information providers, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may assist stakeholders in developing practical extension training programmes that improve farmers’ ability to interpret and use weather information. It may also support stronger collaboration between agricultural extension and weather information providers to ensure that relevant information reaches farmers in an accessible and understandable form.The study concludes that extension training is an important means of improving farmers’ ability to use weather information for agricultural planning and management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular training, practical demonstrations, farmer meetings, and advisory services on the interpretation and application of weather information. Training programmes should emphasise rainfall forecasts, temperature changes, drought and flooding warnings, seasonal forecasts, and their application to planting, crop management, irrigation, and harvesting decisions.
