Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Seasonal Farm Work Planning

Abstract

Seasonal farm work planning is an important aspect of agricultural production because farming activities are influenced by seasonal changes, weather conditions, crop calendars, labour availability, and the timing of farm inputs. Proper planning enables farmers to organise activities such as land preparation, planting, weeding, fertiliser application, pest management, harvesting, and post-harvest operations at appropriate periods. Extension training can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and skills for planning farm activities according to seasonal production requirements. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of seasonal farm work planning. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine their level of knowledge of appropriate methods for planning farm activities across different production periods. The study will also examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of effective seasonal farm work planning. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of seasonal farm calendars, timing of land preparation, planting schedules, input application, weeding, crop protection, harvesting, post-harvest activities, labour allocation, and coordination of farm operations. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to extension meetings, practical demonstrations, farm visits, training programmes, seasonal production information, weather-related advisory services, and other extension activities that support farm planning. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to extension training and knowledge of seasonal farm work planning. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge scores, frequency distributions, percentages, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of seasonal farm planning practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and practical extension training may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of seasonal farm work planning. Training may improve farmers’ understanding of production calendars, timing of farm activities, labour requirements, input scheduling, and preparation for seasonal changes. However, inadequate extension contact, limited access to timely agricultural information, unpredictable weather conditions, labour shortages, and limited planning skills may constrain farmers’ knowledge and effective seasonal farm planning. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farmer cooperatives, policymakers, agricultural planners, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the role of extension training in improving farmers’ knowledge of seasonal farm planning and organising agricultural activities. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing timely training programmes and advisory materials that address farmers’ seasonal production planning needs. The study concludes that extension training is important for improving farmers’ knowledge of seasonal farm work planning and supporting timely and organised farm operations. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies provide regular, practical, and season-specific training on farm calendars, activity scheduling, labour planning, input timing, and harvesting arrangements. Extension agents should also provide timely seasonal information to help farmers prepare appropriately for changing production conditions.
