Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Improved Seed Selection
Abstract
Improved seed selection is an important component of agricultural production because the quality and suitability of planting materials can influence crop establishment, productivity, crop quality, and resistance to production challenges. Farmers require adequate knowledge to distinguish quality seeds from poor-quality planting materials and to select varieties that are appropriate for their farming conditions. Extension training can provide farmers with practical information and technical guidance on seed quality, varietal characteristics, and appropriate seed selection practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of improved seed selection. The study will assess the extent to which extension training improves farmers’ understanding of the characteristics and benefits of improved seeds. It will also determine farmers’ knowledge of appropriate seed selection procedures and examine the relationship between exposure to extension training and their knowledge of improved seed selection. The study will focus on extension training sessions, practical demonstrations, field days, farmer meetings, training materials, and advisory guidance on improved seed selection. Farmers’ knowledge will be assessed in areas such as identification of certified seeds, varietal characteristics, seed quality indicators, germination ability, seed purity, maturity period, resistance to pests and diseases, adaptability to local conditions, yield potential, seed storage, and appropriate sources of quality planting materials. The study will also identify specific areas where farmers may require additional technical information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment items designed to measure their exposure to extension training and knowledge of improved seed selection. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of improved seed selection. The study is expected to reveal that extension training has a positive effect on farmers’ knowledge of improved seed selection. Farmers who receive regular and practical training may demonstrate better understanding of seed quality, varietal suitability, certification, germination, purity, pest and disease resistance, and yield characteristics. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to seed certification, reliable seed sources, seed storage, and varietal selection, indicating areas where further extension education may be necessary. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, research institutions, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may assist agricultural extension providers in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ seed selection needs. It may also support efforts to improve access to quality planting materials and strengthen farmers’ capacity to make informed decisions about improved seed varieties. The study concludes that extension training is an important means of improving farmers’ knowledge of improved seed selection. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular training, field demonstrations, farmer meetings, and technical advisory services on seed selection. Training programmes should provide practical information on seed quality, certification, varietal suitability, reliable seed sources, storage, and performance characteristics to improve farmers’ knowledge and support productive crop production.
