Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Crop Nursery Management

Abstract

Crop nursery management involves the application of appropriate practices for producing healthy and vigorous seedlings before their establishment in the field. Effective nursery management is important because the quality of seedlings can influence plant survival, early growth, crop performance, and eventual yield. Practices such as nursery site selection, seed selection and treatment, nursery bed preparation, sowing, watering, shading, nutrient management, weed control, pest and disease management, hardening, and transplanting are essential for successful crop nursery production. Extension training provides farmers with technical knowledge and practical skills needed to understand and apply these recommended nursery management practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of crop nursery management. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of recommended nursery management practices and determine the extent to which participation in extension training contributes to their understanding of these practices. It will also examine farmers’ exposure to training programmes, frequency of training, and the major sources of information available to farmers on crop nursery management. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of nursery site selection, soil preparation, nursery bed construction, seed selection, seed treatment, sowing methods, spacing, watering, shading, fertilizer and manure application, weed management, pest and disease control, seedling protection, hardening, seedling selection, and transplanting. Attention will also be given to the practical training methods used by extension personnel, including demonstrations, farm visits, field days, group training, farmer field schools, and other advisory activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their knowledge of crop nursery management and their exposure to extension training activities. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of crop nursery management. The study is expected to reveal differences in farmers’ knowledge of crop nursery management based on their level of exposure to extension training. Farmers who participate regularly in practical training, demonstrations, and other extension activities may demonstrate better knowledge of recommended nursery practices. The study may also identify knowledge gaps in areas such as seed treatment, watering, shading, nutrient management, pest and disease control, hardening, and transplanting, as well as constraints such as inadequate training opportunities, limited extension contact, high costs of nursery materials, and insufficient access to technical information. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, nursery operators, agricultural development agencies, farmer associations, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may assist in developing effective training programmes that address farmers’ knowledge gaps and improve the delivery of practical nursery management information. Improved knowledge may contribute to better seedling quality, higher seedling survival, improved crop establishment, reduced production losses, and increased agricultural productivity. The study concludes that extension training is an important means of improving farmers’ knowledge of crop nursery management by providing relevant technical information and practical skills. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen nursery management training through practical demonstrations, farm visits, field days, farmer field schools, and regular advisory services. Farmers should also be provided with timely technical information, quality seeds, appropriate nursery materials, and other necessary inputs to support effective crop nursery management.
