Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Appropriate Farm Equipment Selection

Abstract

Appropriate farm equipment selection is an important aspect of agricultural production because the suitability of equipment can influence farm efficiency, labour requirements, operating costs, and the timely completion of farm activities. Selecting equipment without considering farm size, crop type, soil conditions, available labour, cost, and operational requirements may result in inefficient use of resources and unnecessary expenses. Extension training can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical guidance for making suitable farm equipment selection decisions. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of appropriate farm equipment selection. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine their level of knowledge regarding the factors that should be considered when selecting farm equipment. The study will also examine the relationship between participation in extension training and farmers’ knowledge of appropriate equipment selection practices. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of equipment suitability, farm size, crop requirements, soil conditions, equipment capacity, labour availability, purchase and hiring costs, fuel or energy requirements, maintenance needs, availability of spare parts, equipment durability, and ease of operation. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to extension meetings, demonstrations, machinery training, farm visits, advisory services, and practical information on agricultural mechanisation and equipment selection. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to extension training and knowledge of appropriate farm equipment selection. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge scores, frequency distributions, percentages, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of appropriate equipment selection. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and practical extension training may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of appropriate farm equipment selection. Training and demonstrations may improve farmers’ understanding of how to match equipment with farm size, crop type, soil conditions, labour requirements, and production needs. However, limited access to extension training, inadequate technical information, high equipment costs, limited machinery services, and poor access to spare parts may constrain farmers’ ability to make appropriate equipment selection decisions. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural mechanisation agencies, machinery suppliers, cooperative organisations, policymakers, agricultural development institutions, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the role of extension training in improving farmers’ knowledge of farm equipment selection and supporting more efficient agricultural mechanisation. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ machinery selection and management needs. The study concludes that extension training is important for improving farmers’ knowledge of appropriate farm equipment selection and supporting efficient use of agricultural machinery. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies provide regular practical training and demonstrations on equipment selection, suitability assessment, operating requirements, maintenance considerations, and cost implications. Farmers should also be encouraged to seek technical advice before purchasing or hiring farm equipment to ensure that selected equipment is appropriate for their production needs.
