Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Produce Handling

Abstract

Agricultural produce handling is an important aspect of farm management and post-harvest activities because the manner in which farm produce is harvested, sorted, cleaned, packaged, transported, and stored can influence its quality, safety, shelf life, and market value. Poor handling practices may result in physical damage, contamination, spoilage, and post-harvest losses, thereby reducing the economic returns obtained by farmers. Extension training can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills needed to improve the handling of agricultural produce. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural produce handling. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine their level of knowledge of recommended produce handling practices. The study will also examine the relationship between participation in extension training and farmers’ knowledge of appropriate methods of handling agricultural produce. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of proper harvesting, sorting, cleaning, grading, packaging, transportation, temporary storage, and protection of agricultural produce from physical damage and contamination. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to extension meetings, demonstrations, farm visits, practical training sessions, advisory materials, and other extension activities designed to improve post-harvest handling practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to extension training and knowledge of agricultural produce handling. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge scores, frequency distributions, percentages, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of recommended produce handling practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and practical extension training may have higher levels of knowledge of agricultural produce handling practices. Training through demonstrations, practical sessions, farm visits, and advisory programmes may improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate harvesting, sorting, packaging, transportation, and storage methods. However, inadequate training opportunities, limited extension contact, poor access to handling facilities, and insufficient post-harvest information may constrain farmers’ knowledge and application of recommended practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, produce marketers, cooperatives, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural production and marketing. It may provide useful information on the role of extension training in improving farmers’ knowledge of produce handling and reducing avoidable post-harvest losses. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ post-harvest information needs. The study concludes that extension training is important for improving farmers’ knowledge of appropriate agricultural produce handling practices and supporting better post-harvest management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular, practical, and commodity-specific training on harvesting, sorting, grading, packaging, transportation, and storage. Extension agents should also strengthen demonstrations and farm-based advisory activities to help farmers acquire and apply appropriate produce handling knowledge.
