Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Land-Use Planning

Abstract

Agricultural land-use planning is an important aspect of farm management because it helps farmers make appropriate decisions regarding the allocation and utilization of available land resources. Proper land-use planning can support efficient farm production, reduce land degradation, improve resource utilization, and promote sustainable agricultural development. Extension training can provide farmers with relevant information and practical knowledge needed to understand land-use planning principles and apply them effectively in their farming activities. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural land-use planning. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of land-use planning before and after exposure to extension training and determine the extent to which training contributes to improved understanding of appropriate land-use practices. It will also examine the areas of land-use planning in which farmers require additional extension education. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of land allocation, farm layout, crop selection according to land characteristics, land capability assessment, soil conservation, crop rotation, diversification of farm enterprises, protection of environmentally sensitive areas, efficient use of available farmland, and planning for long-term agricultural production. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to extension training methods such as demonstrations, group training, farm visits, workshops, and advisory services. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of agricultural land-use planning and their exposure to extension training. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ knowledge of agricultural land-use planning. The study is expected to reveal differences in farmers’ knowledge of agricultural land-use planning based on their exposure to extension training. Farmers who participate in regular training programmes, demonstrations, and practical extension activities may demonstrate better knowledge of appropriate land allocation, conservation practices, farm organization, and sustainable land utilization. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ understanding of land capability, conservation planning, and long-term land management. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, land-use planning authorities, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ associations, policymakers, researchers, and organisations involved in sustainable land management. The findings may provide useful information for improving extension training programmes and strengthening farmers’ capacity to make informed decisions concerning the efficient and sustainable use of agricultural land. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of agricultural land-use planning and support more efficient utilization of land resources. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen training programmes through practical demonstrations, farm visits, participatory planning exercises, and educational materials on sustainable land-use practices. Farmers should also be encouraged to apply appropriate land-use planning principles to improve farm productivity and promote long-term sustainability of agricultural land.
